While nothing is Buffering It all adds to the general DroBOrltv that, in mirply coming to the tillers of the soli of Union county. &Pt The railroad boys are busy as bees arranging for their coining excursion. They are -doing everything In their power to make it as pleasant aa pos sible for all who take advantage of apendlng the day along the beautiful Wallowa river, and at Wallowa lake. ' . Congress is still drilling away on the tariff. The Indications are how ever that It will come to a final vote within the next few weeks. It will be so warm hi Washington that in border to get away the minority will give in. Night sessions In July means Increased laundri hills for thi solans. - , 4-V 'City Recorder Cox Is having copies of the proposed charter delivered to the voters of the city as required by law. Thla gives every voter an op portunity to read and carefully con alder what he is voting for. .However, this same charter has been before the people twice before and the general provisions are well understood. It has been gone over and over and In Ita present Btate Is meeting with prac tically no opposition whatever. , V33 The entire Northwest is pleased with the attendance at the Alaska Yukon exposition by eastern people. The tralnB are all loaded, and the great majority are either going one route and returning over different routes which gives them an oppor tunity of realizing what a great coun try lies west of the Rocky moun tains. . Independence day is coming. Just at present La Grande is engaged In preparation for the biggest, best, most truly patriotic celebrutton In the his tory of the city. When we say patri otic, we speak advisedly, for If the people of a town are all pulling to gether, working In harmony, dropping Uiought of individual gain for. the common good, such a state of affairs means patriotism, and patriotism ofthe eaine quality that we have for the national government. This spirit or teal for the good of the city at large Is commendable, It is the saving grace. When other townB of Eastern Oregon, not in this valley, thank you, are hav ing dlfllculty in raising a small cele bration fund, and are struggling along, with neighbors fighting each other in a business way, one hauling this way and another pulling that, according to the personal prejudices, of each, with never a thought of any but gain for self, 1 Grande has been forging to the rout. In business as In vecy other -tne. until now the com mercial travelers, barometera of busi ness, will tell you that It better here than In any other town between Boise and Portland. .Down at Port land the other day the spirit of the city was typically illustrated by the float emblematic of our resources, in which rode the daughter of our chief of police. The city of La Grande re ceived more notice from the visiting throiiKB and the people of Portland than did any other city of Its class in the slate. More than one observe! was heard to Buy that ours was Un bent float, with one exception. In tin parade. The exception was the float Bent by the city of Seattle. Afte the Fourth is come uiid gone, we 11 tlo something else. LA1 SALES. Isolated Tracts Bid la at Land Office . Today.
