May number of the House ki .'r. Dodor William Lee Howard. y.nt- a very pointed article on "Why . tnd girls should be separated 5a si., Hifth School." In this article Doctor Howard makes some startling SUteroents. and yet, upon a thorough Investigation it is found that there Is mw-h food for thought In what he says. It is his belief that boys and girls of th adolescent age should be taught by teachers of their own sex; that they should not be brought to gether In the school room, and that to have them together in the same J$1J but taught by different leathers. Would not produce the de sired result. He thicks that to have the boys and girls together at this age brings out more or less the Idea of sex and detracts from their mental energy to study, whereas. If they were separated all this could be avoided, thus having nothing In the presence o feither suggestive of sex. for he says in this same article that "They are only healthy young animals, endowed with the life and energies we have given them. " Doctor Howard would also have the boys In charge of a physician, who . should examine them from time to time; that this physician should bc !i thru of strong moral character cap rile of advising them regarding their en being, and help them avoid the pitfalls- that are so plentiful In the liio of every school boy. This same rule he would apply to the girls likewise protecting them. This separation of the boys and girls in our own 6chool is not possible tinder present conditions, but it is possible for every parent to teach bis boy or girl the facts of life and not leave it to the vulgar tongue of some street lounger, as is bo fre quently the case now. There Is no high school In the state of Oregon that can boast of a better lot of boys and gins tnan are round in our own high school, and It is to urge the necessity of ever keeping this condition that we suggest the read ing of Doctor Howard's article by all who can. i roy booojiim;. Among the other business to come before the county court during the present session is the matter of ad vertising for bids for the construc tion of a steel bridge at Oro Dell, to replace the old wooden structure that has stood there so long and has Anal ly become so nearly unsafe hat It has been condemned.
