The Blue Mountain University left Its sump of mortality and good citi zenship more vividly than those who have come- to this city , since Us suspension can appreciate. It does 1 sot seem within the realm of our present day progression to conceive that as a matter of fact, as far fas school facilities are concerned, La Grande has retrograded, for since the JBlue Mountain University ceatsed to exiBt we have never had anything beyond the public school in the way of higher education and the parents of the pro-sent' generation have op portunities that their children can not receive without going elsewhere. Jt Is too bad for the benefiit of this itv. that the school could not be maintained, but the population was too sparse at the time It was begun, which was .10 years prior to the ad vent of the railroad, and the financial burden was too great to X4 continued by the patriotic few. On Saturday night in this city the former students and friends ' of i'nt old Blue Mountain hld their third Reunion. , To the residents of re cent years this meant' little, but to the older settlers who are familiar with the.causes that led to the erec tion of this once proepoerous institu tion, that drew students not only from our present and adjoining counties but from Idaho and eaBtern Wash ington, it is Important. During the 10 or more years of its existence, scores of young men and women passed through its doors and many of them are today carrying the responsibilities of every avenue of activity. The corner stone was laid with fit lng ceremony on the Fourth of July, 1874. J. L. Carter, under whose ad ministration the school prospered, was the first president. J. L. Lensure was another and Professor Ackerman and Abraham Fades and O. M. Irwin are names that revive tender memories In not a few of .our present day readers . the O. R. & N. vs Coolidge to make the defendant file a more definite and certain answer was overruled. In the divorce case of Flora Stoop vs William Stoop, defendant declared in default, and ordered to pay the clerk of the court $50 for plaintiff's attorney's tees and an additional sum of 25 per month for benefit of plain tiff during pendency of the' action or until otherwise ordered by the court. In the suit of A. J. Parks vs Charles ill 0E- CONCERT SET (OR JUK money on a promissory note. Parks gained judgment by default for $252.65 and attorney's fees to the amount of $33. It is further ordered that the property of Charles Todd be so!d at execution to satisfy the judgment. Mrs. Stella Taylor was given an absolute divorce from Porter R. Tay lor and awarded the custody of a minor child. By mandate of the supreme court the judgment of the lower court was reversed in the case of S. S- Boothe vs Farmers and Traders National bank, and the findings of the referee were confirmd. Judgment is thereby given the bank for $228.59 and interest, to gether with the costs and disburse ments occasioned by the appeal to the supreme court. . Airship Returned. BKRL1NY June J.
