MY TO berry, who for 42 years has been en gaged in educational work, has put la some seveu or eight of them In La' Grande. When he came here the schools required a teaching force numbering :. This last year there were 20 teachers employed. By the departure- of these people La Grande loses. The value of her loss cannot be estimated in any way. Ko one can measure the Incalculable Vneficence of eight years of. stead fast and unremitting effort on the pan of a good man to uplift and make sane and beutiful the lives of the boys and girls in a community. Who may bound the circle of the Influence of such a life? Who may say that this boy or that girl is no better for hav ing sat under the teaching and ex ample of a thorough scholar and earnest Christian? Since the arrival of Mr. Hockcr. berry in Ia Grande, about nine years ego, he lias labored constantly for the boys and girls of the city. Thut bis work has been rewarded may be ascertained by asking the boys and girls themselves. No where In the state Is there a school which Individ ually and collectively stands bo hlKb morally. We'fsay this advisedly. Xo school in the state of Oregon has so ' clean young men and young women as has the La Grande high school. And among the higher Institutions of learning, to which our graduates na turally gravitate, no public school has i a higher standing. That those good things are due in lnrge measure to .', the man who hs been at the head of our school for ho long is indubl ably true, and that In losing him and ' bis family, La Grnndo loses greatly. ' The entire city wishes Mr. Hocken berry f 11. good fortune In the new work he is about to take up, and wh in he choose; to visit among us, he will be welfomed by nil who are so for tunate ns to have known him. ASSEMBLE The second annual reunion of the Woodell family will be held at the Oliver Shaffer grove, east of island City, June 19 and 20. The first day of the reunion will be exclusively for the family, while on Sunday all friends of the family are invited to attend. Visitors are asked to bring luncheon. Professor deliver his last lecture to the young people of the church and city with whom he has been so close ly assoc iated for the past eight years. . It was considered one of the finest addresses ever delivered in the city. Replete with high ideals and. coming from a man whose life stood out squarely on these principles, it car ried much weight In addressing the young people be declared emphati cally. "You can have everything you want In this life If you are willing to pay the price. X High Compliment. ' In speaking of our high Bcbool boys and girls he passed a high com- fiuucul iuoi. lie ; ajHfke al- vUedly, that out of the S3 boys in the high school there . was not one who smoked cigarettes and only abort three who smoked at all, and tli:it there was not a single bad girl. While thus complimenting our young people In this way and .the parents, the facts are that for this unprecedented condition to Professor Hockenberry himself is due the honor i to a much greater degree than to any other person. It is simply the result of his eight years of fidelity to the ,p building of character that has taken root and pentrated the avenues of are too careless. Pay Tonr Debts. He admonished all to pay their debts emphasizing the fact that the man or woman who did not pay their honest debts were not themselves honest. Notwithstanding it Is unusual to cheer speakers In church on Sunday, at the conclusion of his masterpiece of eloquence and logic, and farewell advice, with one accord the audience found themselves expressing their deepest expression of appreciation, and after the congregation sang "God Be With Us Till Meet Again," one and all personally came forward and took a farewell handshake and speak a parting word. and Mrs. Stevens leave tonight for Portland, where they will make their future home and where Professor Hockenberry will associate himself with his son, who two years ago established himself there in the archi tect business.
