Route No. 1 'Phone No. l6x La MESSAGE TOilil The "hard times" which have pre vailed for the past eighteen months have resulted in driving almost all the mediocre and inferior theatrical attractions out of businss. The per centage of failures has been greater than was ever known before in the atrical history. It has all resolve:! Itself Into a case of "the survival of the fittest." ' The famous English comedy dram, A Message From Mars" which will be the attraction at the Steward to night, has, since the beginning' of the persent season, last August, duplica ted and In some instances surr-iSrieo its financial returns of previous ea sons. This, notwithstanding the ;act that "A Message From Mars" is eight years old and has been seen in some of the cities visited for the fourth time in its many seasons. SPLENDID RECEPTION. Half Hundred Visit Informally With FhihIIj About to Iifsu. More than a half a hundred last evening attended the reception given by Mr. and Mrs. George Cleaver in honor of Prof, and Mrs. H. J. Hocken- berry and Miss Huffman at the Cleaver residence. It was an informal affair entirely, where old-time friends re cited Incidents of the past and events of the present. The large attendance attests to the popularity which the guests of honor hold in La Grande. Music by several of the guests present enlivened the occasion and before de parture the guesis were Berved with refreshments. Mr. and Mrs. Hocken berry have been residents of La Grande close on to 10 years, the de parture of this family from La Grande will be occasion for regret by all.' Fastest Jupcllii!?
