Managing a : farm of 360 acres, living by herself 'in a sparsely settled neighborhood i two miles from Huntington, further Isolated by the reason of her Mormon belief, tolling from morning until night with shovel along an irrigation Jhlttch and with horp n tzrrz work, Miss" Alice Durbin, aged 53, native of Oregon, is one of the most unique characters In . this section where uniqueness is not a rare thing. Miss Durbin was the only daughter of C. J. Durbin, a pioneer of this sec tion, who settled on part of the land now owned by his heir, in 1$75. At the same time tho daughter took a claim of 160 acres adjoining the land of her father, and this land she has owned and improved constantly since. At her father's dtiath she became owner of 200 acres of the old home stead, and throwing the entire tract i Into a big farm begun its management and cultivation. Of the tract 150 acres are under irrigation, a system of water having been installed at heavy expense by the father and daughter many years ago, The land lies near the Snake river valley and will produce all kinds of fruit and vegetables, making it valu able as well as in need of great care. Yet with it all Miss Durbin manages f?rm rrlth tact ptul. uiiiug help during the busy season and rent ing such tracts as she feels in 'duty bound to give control to others. But daily, year in and year out. since 1875 this little woman has lived and work ed upon the broad acres lying on tiie bluffs above Snake river, Miss Durbin was, born at Salem, Ore.. December 11, 156, and a few years later wps brought by her par ents to eastern Oregon. In all these years she has visited Portland only once, to see the Lewis and Clark Ex position, but has never been outside of the state.. Her mother, having died when she was a mere child, to ber befell the task of rearing four broth ers, two of whom still survive. Bur dened with cares beyond her years, Miss Durbin became reconciled to her fate upon tho bleak Oregon hills, and has never desired to change her lot, either by marriage or removal. f AF ( A IMC umumru .
