Robert Blumenstein of Elgin came up this afternoon., and will remain over to attend the Farmers meeting in this city. Joe Parkes the genial justice of the peace in Pendleton is a land office visitor today. He will return tomor row. Doctor and Mrs. C. H. Fred's many friends regretted very much to see him leave, but naturally O. R. Cassyoung of Portland is here to be employed by the O. R. & N. In a short time he will be joined by his wife, and they will make their future home here. Mr. Cassyoung is a brother of Mrs. Dell Jackson of thi3 city.' ' Roy H. Campbell writes from Cen tral Point, Oregon, that the prospects for a fine fruit crop in his section are extremely bright. Mr. Campbell at one time lived near Imbler, devoting his energies to raising "spuds." Misses Fern Conrad and Cecile Ger man of Imbler are here taking the eight grade examinations. They paid the Observer office a visit and were Bhown the mysteries of the linotype and the workings of the job plant and newspaper shop. The general morality loving public will be Interested to know that Mrs. ilOTED LADY (OMlfid E. E. Sbepard of Salt Lake City w'll boon come to La Grande, the city of conventions, to make addresses ou th work of the Woman Christian Tem perance Union. She has for years been at the head of that department of aggressive activity in Utah and has been justly kept in the forefront of the institution because of her opti mistic zeal and her never-failing suc cess. Her husband is one of the well known attorneys of Salt Lake City. KEP.iIRS PROGRESSING. ' ' . Mr. Taal will' have finished the grading on the court house grounds by tonight or early tomorrow morn ing, and will at once begin hauling the top dressing, of which several hundred loads will be required. Construction of a two-story brick between the Foley hotel and the La Grande restaurant, facing Adams av enue, is soon to b commenced by J, E. Foley, according to rpffior today. .Vr. Mrs. John LIghtfoot was appointed a special committee by the association to make immediate appeal to the gov ernment, and try to have the grounds improved by them.
