At a iate hour this afternoon, con
tinuous search during the daylight
hours since Saturday noon, has tailed
to' discover the wherabouts of Berne
De Lap) and' Marion Smith who were
drowned while fording the Grande
Ronde river just below the Island
City bridge.
The entire county is watching the
efforts with deep interest, and hun
dreds have lent their assistance in the
so-far futile searches.
Wagon Box Missing.
The search thus far has revealed
the whereabouts of the running gear,
seat, cushions and other accessories
of the vehicle in which the boys were
riding but the wagon box has not been
located this afternoon.
Systematic Searching.
Island City people this morning sub
scribed considerable money to hire a
ciew of men to do systematic search
ing. Groups of men, 50 to 100 In
number, have lent their willing assls-aiu-e,
but the works lacks system. Not
a stone will remain unturned once
the drag nets have gone down the
stream.
The list will' be left at the La Grande
National bank in this city where any
one can give toward the cause. The

IMPROVED THIS SUMMER
Quite a stretch of macadam road,

built in Union county this summer.
From the end of Adams avenue tow

piece of the road that has always been
in bad condition, and this will be
macadamized. The county court lias
also decided that the McAlister. lane
is a proper place to work on. Farm
ers will be asked to haul rock fjr
the roads in their vicinity, and the
court hopes thus to be able to make
their appropriation of $8,000 do a great
deal of good.

MKRCER. Pa., May 10. James
Boyle, ki.lnaper of Billie Whitia, was
today sentenced to life imprisonment,
and his wife guilty of the same, crime,
was sentenced to 25 years, aud fined
$5.0u0. Te sentences were the heavi
est under the Pennsylvania laws. ,
Besides the fine Airs. Boyle was
compelled to pay cost of her pros
ecution. Her ( attorneys said today,
her brother, who is defraying expen
ses of her defense, has decided not to
give any more money, so, it Is prob
able . the case will not be appealed.
She was 23 years old yesterday, aud
her husband sent her an affectionate
message pud money. ,,
A razor was found today in the lin
ing of a necktie .worn by Boyle, who
admitted he Intended to commit sui-1
tide.' Officials belelve the pair planned i
to suicide t6gether.' Her request to
see her husband was last night denied. I

While the exact figures are not
yet available, It is certain that the
! carnival made quite a handsome profit
for the park and for the Commercial
club. The total rcelpts from the sale
of carnival tickets were $424.85. The
expense of wiring for the special

to be divided between the park fund
j and the club, giving them $162 "each.
From the benefit dinner given by the
Eastern Star the profits realized was
about $80, and the tags brpught nearly
$250. Altogether, the total amount
accruing to the park fund from the
week's activities will be practically
$500, although not quite that much.
This is quite a large sum, but none
too much, considering the vast amount
of work done by the ladies who took
charge of affairs. Should their labor
have been paid for at regular rate of
wages, a good deal more than $5u0
would have been neded to foot the
bill.
One of the strangest freaks of a
demented mind, came to a climax hero
this arternoon, when K. B. Long, aged
60, of Summerville was' forced to re
turn to La Grande by main strength,
after he had planned to elude the
officers who were watching him, ferr-

Next Wednesday or Thursday En
gineer Pickler will have run the final
survey Jrom Beaver creek to La
Grande, establishing permanently the
course to be followed by the pipe line
that will convey pure and sparkling
water to the users in this city. The
engineer was in the city Sunday and a
portion of today, and reports that the
crew has reached the Beaver creek
terminal with its preliminary survey
and Is now as far as Rock creek, re
turning. The return survey is to
shorten curves, establish grades, make
corrections and in divious ways, make
permanent the survey. The crew
should reach here before the week
end. From the data secured by this sur
vey, plats and plans will be drawn,
the doing of which will consume con
siderable time In the engineer's office.

shorter than the first survey, which
recorded a little more than 18 miles.
