yesterday, show that the housewlfes
of La Grande are rapidly adopting the
"buy at home" spirit. These men pay
a paltry license fee and virtually steal
from the mouthes of the men who live
here, maintain payrolls, pay their
taxes and have helped each by hta
little or larger mite to make La
Grande. When the city as a whole
makes life a drudge for peddlers,
the sooner will the local merchant ac
quire a profitable business.
Peddler in this Instance is not only
applicable to the man who braves
the house dog and meanders from
house to house, but the peddler who
works under the guise of a highly
colored catalogue. This one is no
better than the other except In this
respect that the dago peddler actu
ally does pay a small license while
the catalogue man dodges even that.
The Observer has always been a
staunch friend of the home merchant,
but never more so than now, and on
the eve of greater prosperity in Union
county, this paper will redouble its
efforts and by enlisting the aid of
every buyer, every housewife, every
husband, every girl every boy and.also
the merchant himself, hopes thereby
to stamp out the out-of-town pur
chases. The merchants must be the
first to move however-stock up so
that there is no excuse for going
abroad. . , .
