school meeting of school district No.
One, of Union county, Oregon, to be
beld at High School building In said
district, n the 27th day of Morch,
1909, there will be submitted to the
legal voters of said district the ques
tion of contracting a bonded debt of
twenty-five thousand dollars for the
purpose of erecting and equipping a
high school building, the vote to be
by ballot, upon which shall be the
words, "Bonds- Yes," and the words,
"Bonds-No."

county will adopt earlier closing hours
after April 1. This action was agreed
upon by a recent meeting of the Union
County Bankers' association. In ad
dition to that Important step several
others aimed to establish uniformity
In all departments of banking In thlB
county, were taken. Among these 'are
the matters of bonds, rates of ex
change, Interest on deposits and the
election of officers.
Several years ago the association
was formed with F. L, Meyers, La
Grande, president; J. B. Thorson, El
gin, vice-president; Will Wright,' of
Union, secretary. But few meetings
have been held In the several years
which the association has existed, but
recently one was arranged and a large
amount of business transacted. The
association Is patterned after the state
association, which wields a strong
power for good throughout the state.
The New Officers.
Today the officers of the bank are:
F. L. Meyers, La Grande National
bank, presldc.it; E. T. Kaster, Union
National Bank, vice-president; Will
Wright, First National Bank of Union,
secretary; J. B. Thorson, First Na
tional Bank of Elgin, treasurer.

Commencing on April 1, all banks
In this association will open at 9
o'clock and close at 3 o'clock: The
public will rapidly adjust Itself to the
new closing hours and after the first
few days no difference will be ex
perienced In the change over the old
system. The members who have

ing to the county, are: La Grande Na
tional. United States N'atlonnl of La
Grande, the First National of Union,
the Union National of Union, the First
National of Elgin, the Powder Valley
State Bank of North Powder, the Cove

In the matter of official bonds, the
officers and directors of banks which
are members of this association will
not become security on the bond of
any public official on 'behalf of said
bank.

Exchange will be charged on all
checks, etc., cashed, which are drawn
on banks located at other points, and
on all drafts sold at the following
rates: $10 and under, 5 cents; over
$10 and under $50, 10 cents; over $50
to $100, 15 cents: over $100, at the
rate of 10 cents for each additional
$100.
Interest on deposits will not exceed
4 per cent per annum. All nterest

It is very likely that the Union coun
ty track and field meet will be held

would conflict with the Walla Walla
meet and a later date would not be
convenient for the eastern Oregon
meet at. Pendleton. When Mr. Conk

night, plans for holding the Union

ed upon. April 24 Is the most satis
factory date.

A new turn of events has rather as
tonished the members of the track
team -when it was announced by let

that the Walla Walla management
would only take six men. There are
nearly twice that number In the squad
who have splendid chances to win, and
some solution will be worked out that
will mean sufficient finances to take
at least 10 men to the Garden City

name Is Joseph Merritt Alexander,
and he has been an engineer on the
Boston & AlbanI for 50 years. During
the half century f his service he never
received a reprimand nor a bluck
mark; no error was ever recorded
against him, and no human lives were
ever lost while he guided the fast en
gines over the miles of track. He
never mslsed a day during his . 50
years of service, never, was late, and
for the last 25 years he rose every day
at 3 a. m., and was beside his engine
shortly after, ready for duty at 4:30.
The miles he covered would stretch to
the moon at least 10 times, and 80 or
90 times around the globe.
