An ordinance prescribing the duties
of the street superintendent.
The City of La Grande does Ordain an
follows:
Section 1. The street superintend
ent of the city of La Grande, Oregon,
shall have the general supervision of
air streets, alleys, squares, parks,
grounds, highways, sidewalks, cross
walks ami sewers within the city. All

Sec. S. When upon the recommen
dation of the superintendent the street
committee shall conclude that any
sidewalk or, sidewalks should be re
paired., they shall authorize him In
writing to give written notice to any
owner, occupant or agent of any prop
erty abutting on any sidewalk so out
of repair that the same must be re
paired within 10 days after receipt of
such notice and that If the repairs are
not so made, that the city will repair
'the same at the expense of the owner.
Sec .4. The superintendent shall
not contract for any private work of
any kind, for any person, or do any
private work, or contract either for
the city, or any one employed by the
city, to do any private work, unless
authorized so to do by the council.
Sec. 5. The superintendent shall,
before entering upon his duties, give
a bond In the sum of $500,011. condi
tioned for the faithful performance
thereof.
Sec. . In as much as the present
duties of the superintendent are not
clearly defined, and as it Is necessary
that this be done 'In order that the
work of the city be carried on in such
manner as to secure the well being,
safety and convenience of Its hab
itants an emergency Is hereby declared
to exist, and this ordinance shall, after
its approval by the mayor, and its
publication In one Issue of the La
Grande Evening Observer, be In force
and take effect on a,nd after the 20th
day of March, 19A9.
Passed the council on the 15th day
of March, 1909, by five councllmen
voting therefor.

penses of which the American Light
& Water company, by the terms of

will require about 60 days to pass an
other charter, but this will not delay
the beginning of the work as the con
tracting company states it will pro-
