-Law, aided by the W. C. T. U., last
night succeeded at a special meeting
-of the council, In securing the pas
sage of the Sunday closing ordinance:
Persons under 21 will not be allowed
"to enter stores where tobacco la sold,
if the ordinance Is enforced, and It
-wiii be unlawful to "send children for
groceries as the stores sell tobacco.
Under the ordinance Ice cream and
-soft drink parlors and places of busi
ness other than drug stores and bak
eries, hotels, livery stables and under-
takers, are required to close. No ar
gument was made against the measure,
which was passed by a two-thirds ma
jority, and Is now up to the mayor to
.-sign. .
Business Men Defiant.
It is understood places of business
-will defy the ordinance next Sunday,
-After the council meeting some one
went to the store of Councilman Mcin
tosh, and emptied several gallons of
coal oil Into the streets from barrels
In the front cf his place.' It la sup
posed some miscreant sought by this
means to seek revenge because Mcin
tosh voted for the ordinance.

summons to appear before the grand
jury which was called to probe the
charges and counter charges of graft
and misconduct In municipal affairs,
former Mayor A. CV Harper, whose res
ignation followed a recall campaign
against him, has returned to the city
today for a rest resort. Political and
tenderloin bosses are scattering In all
directions. Alphonse Duranda, who
collected the rents In the restricted
districts for Nick Oswald, the political
"czar," has been ai rested and will be
held until he gives testimony before
the jury. Oswald has disappeared.

Montreal, March 17. A fast train
on the Boston & Maine railroad, run
ning wild with no one at the throttle,
crashed through the station here to
day, plunging Into the women's wait
ing room, killing six Instantly. Five
were probably fatally Injured.
The blowing out of a plug In the
boiler hurled the engineer from the
cab and disabled -the llreman when
the train was a mile from the station.
With nobody guiding the train entered
the city at a trrlflc speed and jumped
the track near the station. It drove
straight Into the building.
Crushed Beyond Recognition,
The-loss Is estimated. at $100,000.
An unknown little girl was crushed be
yond human resemblance. Mrs. W.
J. Dixon, wife of the train dispatcher,
and her child, were crushed under the
lender of the engine.

street commissioner, doplsts have ar
ranged a Blate of appointments that
are to be made tonight by Mayor M.
K. Hall, when the council meets to
ratify these appointive offices. It Is
generally believed In political circles
this afternoon that the list of appo.nt
menta will be something like this:
City attorney, J. F. Baker, present
Incumbent; night police, J. W, Wal
den and J, McLachlln (if two are. ap
pointed); water superintendent, H. C.
Gllman, present Incumbent; pound
master, J. C. Black, present Incum
bent;, engineer, pump house, John Al
len, present Incumbent.
Even those nearest to the mayor
will not venture a guess as to who will
be named for the street superintend-
ency. Matott's numerous friends are
anxious to see him reappointed, but
others are of the opinion that his
name will not be mentioned.
The council meets In regular session
tonight and among the many, other
things that will be settled, will be these
appointive offices.

Eugene, Ore., March 17. Mark D.
Rolfe, son of Eugene S. Rolfe, a lo
cal , capitalist. Is believed to be the
man who suicided at the Union hotel,
New York city, Friday night. He wore
a hat. bought at Eugene, with the Ini
tials M. I.. R. stamped in the sweat
band. The young man left here a
month ago with $300, Intending' to
make a trip around the world. ' The
father did not know anything about
his son's whereabouts untll'notlfled of
the suicide by the United Press. He
left for New York today. The son was
a hlRh school student here.

Cooper, Robin Cooper, his son, and
John Sharp'e, charged with the mur
der of former Senator Carmack. The
Instructions ocntalned 18.000 words,

sented the tariff bill bearing his name.

Heavy Tea Duly. - '
Coffee is admitted free, and there Is
no change on the beer tax, A heavy
blow Is dealt the Importers of tea
which is free .under the Dlngley law.
The bill fixes the duty at eight cents
per pound from countries where tea
Is produced, and nine from other
countries. A reduction of five cents
per hundred pounds on refined sugar
Is provided. Printing paper tariff Is
reduced 68 2-3 per cent and 60 per
cent, according to value.

said the maximum rates applied to
countries discriminating against th
United States, or not giving the United
States rates as favorable as they give
to other nations, and said this section
Is self-acting, making It the duty of

Fossil, Ore.,. March 17. William
Grant, a prominent sheepman of
Wheeler county, was drowned yester
day afternoon while attempting to ford
the John Day river near Spray, Ore.
His-horses were unfamiliar with the
stream and went Into deep water.
