ISIg Deal In Coal Iroerttw Being IVr lotted In Clifc-ago. Chicago, March . The purchase of the WbIkIi coal properties and' the properties of the Derlng Coal com pany is culminating rapidly. The United States Steel corporation, and the Chicago A Eastern . Illinois Railroad company are negotiating jointly with the Chicago clearing house committee. The transaction, which In volves securities and partly agreed values aggregating nearly J13,000,0u0, has been under wajr for coni time and is said to give pronil.se of successful culmination. It Is understood the clearing hjuse committee has set a price of 82.R00, 000 on the Walsh coal lands, which property is held by the association among securities in lieu of funds ad vanced at the time the banks of John E. Walsh were liquidated. The Option on the Derlng Coal com pany's properties, which Is said to have been given the Joint purchasing In terests some time ago, has been ac cepted, but the terms have not been made public. Official Suppress Editors. Madrid, March 9. Since the publi cation two weeks ago of some cable grams between General Blanco'' at Ha vana and the government at Madrid regarding the surrender of the city of Santiago, Cuba, to General Shafter on July 17, 1898, a bitter controversy has been waged here by the editors of some of the Madrid papers who wish to place the blame for the untimely and disgraceful surrender upon the government officials rather than upon the brave generals who were on the field of action to uphold the honor of Spain, and the editors of other paper? who defend the course the government took. It was learned here that there was held last night a secret cabal of official and cx-officlals whose names have been used or hinted at in the controversy in such a way as to be smirch their dignity, to decide whether the further publication of all informa tion on the subject will be stopped by censure or whether an argument will be circulated In their defense. The decision reacted will be made public by the action taken and It Is probable that all articles not favorable to the government side of the case will be quietly suppressed and further dis graceful disclosures prevented. The rankling article last published contained a batch of messages sent during the war time which demon strate that the government, when It found that nianco was unalterably op posed to surrender, communicated di rectly with General Torel, the com mander at Santiago, giving him a free hand to make terms. St. Patrick's Parade. New York, March 9. The New York Hibernians, who have, a reputa tion for fitly celebrating St. Patrick's day are planning to outdo all previous efforts. A general meeting was held last night by the members of the An cient Order of Hibernians to make ii c imirttiuiis ior liie bin pttiitoo to in held March 17, In honor of the patron nlnt of all Irishmen. Three trustees were elected, and a conference of the county officers was held and the plans made by the airangement committee were considered. Over 1500 candidates are to be put through the four degrees of the order on Sunday night,' so that they will be In readiness for the coming celebra tion. There will be over 500 battalions In line, and each one will be headed by a band. All carriages except those oc cupied by Mayor McClellan and Arch bishop Farley will be eliminated from the parade. Several other minor changes have also hern made by the arrangement committee. Pittsburg Tunnel Work. Pittsburg. March 9. The GouM In terests, which began the expenditure of J200.000 at the beginning of the month in finishing up the tunnels in this tV. tvi-.-t, are pushing the work with rre.it rapidity. ;- are 11 tunnels on this line within a few miles and only a few of them have been lined or finished as railroad requirements specify. It is figured that to rellne the tunnels with brick will require three months. Powder Case on. New York, March 8. The powder rase, or Ponder trust, will bo on to morrow, pursuant to adjournment on account of illness of a witness at for mer hearing. A large number of pa pers have been admitted In evidence. A statement of the assets and liabili ties of the company was asked for, but Counsel Button said a statement in that line could not be eeccured In an Kent Room In Pendleton. With the liberal donations made by the farmers at the meeting of the In land Grain Growers' association Satur day afternoon, the ladies of the city are now in a position te-open the rest room and this will be done in the very near futwre, says the Pendleton East Oregonlan. A .total of 8186 has now been secured, $128 donated Saturday, and while this Is' enough to guarantee the furnishing and opening of the room, further contributions will be thankfully received and put to a ben eficial US'?. Mr. J. F. Robtnsnn, as president of the Current Literature club, which has earrledon the campaign for the rest room, will appoint a board of five or seven members to have charge of and be responsible for the rest room. Two of tho members of this board will be women from the country. As soon as the board Is appointed the furniture for the room will be pur chased and It Is announced that all will be in readiness for the opening by April 1. The. appointments will probably be made by Mrs. Robinson tomorrow afternoon. Debate Friday Night.
