Under the new emergency tax law
rearrangement of assessments. Union
county' state assessed valuation is
nearly $6,000,000 above the original
assessment about $7,000,000, making
a total assessable valuation in Union
county of $12,000,000. This sharp In-
rease will mean that Union county
will add just $1000 to the apportion
ment paid Into the state coffers. A

assessments of the several counties on
the rolls of 1908 and apportioned the
state taxes among the several counties

This new apportionment has been

equalisation of assessments. Baker
county's valuations were Increased $3,
000,000, Benton $5,000,000, Clackamas

A mysterious tiny baby girl, born
night before last, of good parentage,
a heuithy baby, and a good disposition,
is to be given Into the care of some
good family to be raised properly and
Is now at the home of Dr. T. M. Hen
derson, wrievp It will be kept until a
good home can be found for the
child, relates the Pendleton East Ore
goiiian. The reason for giving the child
away is that the parents don't want
the chilil. Beyond this Dr. Henderson
refuses U stale any of the particulars.
While out on one of bin professional
visits the child was born and the
mother asked the doctor to take the
baby and find a home for It. This
the doctor is attempting to do and if
no suitable place can be found the
doctor and his wife will keep it them
selves. The baby is a fine, healthy
child and the doctor will vouch for Us
parentage, but beyond this he refuses
to make any statement. A number of
caUers have ben to see the child and
application" 'rive been made for the
baby, but I' I. as not been given to
any one so far.

The equalization of assessments is
effective only for state taxation and
does not change the .valuations for
county taxation.
Rev. Ellis was instrumenatl In con
verting 11 Chinamen, all of whom be
came members of his church ami this
is the first funeral of any of the mem
bers of the class. The church was
filled and the audience included no
IPss than 50 Chinamen, who were
greatly Imprensed with the services.
The deceased man was about 50 years
of age.
