They operated In The Dalles Satur ui.y and the day before, and a let t lescrlbing them and their habits had oeon sent to the sheriff's office Satur lay night. The force Is on the look out for them. They wt u. thought to have bought a ticket from The Dalles as far as Umatilla, but it is uncertain where they will stop. The band is a most skillful one and for soma time past have issued coins of the mintage of 1901. Their spuri ous Tjold pieces have been passed In a number of cities and they have suc ceeded In scattering thousands of dol lars of the bogus $5 and $10 gold pieces over the country In spite of the -fforts of the officers. The coins are so cleverly made that only an expert can detect thorn. Those that have been passed through a num her of hands are more easily detected. because the counterfeiters have not Plated the coins any too well. There are a few slight biemisnes in tne mold In which the coins were made. but even those defects can hardly be told without the aid of a strong mag uifylng glass. Another way to distin guish the counterfeit from the real money 's by its weight. It wits not until several days ago that the coins began to appear, but just how long the gang who circulat ed them has been at r.s work, no one is able to determine. Most of the re ports so far received come from own ers of small lodging houses and sa loons where the counterfeit coins have been passed eMthcr in payment for lodging or for drinks over the bar. In some Instances the bad pieces of money have found their way Into tin general trade, having been passed In nocently by those receiving Hu m first.
