L, Brenholts George Palmer Brykit H0 ft '-Si As predicted In The Observer last evening, the grand Jury hns gone to the bedside of F. P. La n I us, the man shot last Tuesday by his fcon-in-law, Claytun Smith. Unable to decide on a report without hearing testimony of the man phot, and the latter being no seriously ill that he could not appear before the grand Jury, the Justice wielders went to the home of the man In North Union thin morning. The trip was made in a carryall, the Juror:) being under the guardianship of Bailiff riark. What testimony I.anius gave will of course, never be known, except by the six men who heard it, but in the atiaiiiL'ii interview granted Editor Scl- blrd of the Union Republican, venter- flay In presented a close corroboration to the story told by Smith and pub lished In The Observer the day follow ing the shooting. In the interview which follows, Lanlus admits having drawn his knife: "I started down town and met Clay ton Smith and the Ratz boy near Mr. Hutchinson's place. I told Smith 1 would certainly like to get hold of him. He said, 'Damn you, come am1 net me." 1 had Just finished eating an apple and had a little jackknlfo lr r.y hand. I got up within eight m H feet, when Smith whipped out a six shooter and said: "Put up that knife.' I said, -lon't you think I'll put up my knife with you with a slx-shoote; drawn on me.' He said, 'Don't yoi I'ome any closer to me or I'll shoot you.' I advanced a little closer am' he shot twice, the second shot taking ffect. When the shot struck me, I van disabled. Here the Katz boy said: I'm going hiiimv' and started up the voad south. Smith followed Rntz took hold of him and told him tr "ome uilh him to his fSmith's) home. Then Smith and Rata went ahead ot ne to the Smith home. I proceeded !o my home, which I reached after resting twice on the way." The Republican representative was shown the knife used by T,anius a' the time of the encounter. It was an rdinary two-bladed knife, the lonp olnde being about 2 Va or 3 Inches In 'ength. As the Republican goes to press the ondltlon of Mr. I,anlus Is considered more favorable, and the Indications ire t ha t he may survive the injury. The ladles of Ihe Five" Hundred club lire greatly pleatied with the re sult of the evening financially as nearly 150 has been added to the fust growing park fund. The guests in turn feel amply rtpald for th kindness of the ladles which per mitted them to spend so pleasant an evening for the benefit of the park, and many were the requests for a repetition of last nlghfn event. The fadles of the Club extend their thi.iU.J' "a whjjA ar; w.-iy nH-d them to make the occasion a Fuccess. In a nutshell, enthusiasm for the park seems unbounded and immense ly popular, and no urging was neces sary to get an outpouring of people. (if!
