Portland people are more and more
interested In the advancement of Ore
gin, the First National Rank and Ladd

gon Development league that their
subscriptions for the year 190J would
be $200 per month itiKtead of 1100, as
In former years. This same sum Is
nubscribed by the Portland Railway.
Light & Power company, while the
United States National Bank has ad
vanced from $50 to $100 per month.
These are larger ubeription than are
made by the financial and business in
terests of any other city In the United
States.
An enormous amount of attention
has been excited by the invitation to
"hlcago. extended through the ways
and means committee of the Chicago
Association of Commer'-e, to send t50
Chicago school boys and girls for a
two months' trip through the western
states. The commercial bodies if the
whole west are Joining with the Port
land Commercial club to insure ac
ceptance of the invitation. Hundreds
of business men who do business with
'"hicago firms are asking those firms
to co-operate with H. A. Wheeler,
chairman of the ways and means com

eago, in bringing this about. If any

Portland and Vancouver. Washing
ton, are getting more and more chum

no occasion when the people of the
two cities enjoyed themselves more
heartily than at the launching of the
new ferry boat "City of Vancouver"
from the St. Johns Shipbuilding com
pany's yards at St. Johns, last Satur
day ufternoon. This is a home built
boat and for that reason the best.
