One of the biggest surprises amount ing to little short of a local sensation was commenced here this week when Deputy Prosecuting Attorney V. R, Kberhard filed a complaint against K. B. Wheat, a Jeweler, charging him with conducting a stud poker gt(me, 'ind at the same time It became whis pered about that such a game had been running for some time. The ar rest of such a prominent man brought reat criticism on the young prosecut ing officer, but through the suspense caused by the temporary failure to get his witnesses, he maintained a com plete silence, until the preliminary hearing, which was held Wednesday. The evidence showed that the pros ecution's witness had gambled all night recently, in Wheat's place, and It Is stated that he lost co-u'derable money. Justice SmIUi held Wheat to Hnswer the charge before the grand Jury at the next term of court.
