Ina; up interest in this meeting; Every farmer who has caught the In splratlon of the wonders that water ill do In this valley, should work hie telephone overtime inducing his neigh tors to attend. Our readers would be surprised to know the extent the commercial In terests of this state are watching the r-rult of the attempt to irrigate the Grande Ronde valley. Grande Rond valley Is already famous for Its fruit. Its fine stock, dairy interests, hay producing qualities and general pro ductiveness, and with the well known results of Irrigation wherever tried In the northwest, those who know us now expect greater things with water. The writer this week vlnited a number of the large wholesale houses In Portland and In three of these establishments two sentences had not passed until the question was asked, "How Is your Irrigation project coming?" and one added, "That will make a garden of your beautiful little valley." It is no wonder the business men cf Portland are Interested In the develop ment of the state. The business houses nt Poftland can only grow in propor tion to the growth of the state. They now have numerous accounts through out the state, when a few years ago they sold comparatively nothing. To day we have cities and car lines where a few years ago were desert tracts. You cannot tell the commercial world anything about Irrigation; their ledgers tell the story more graphically than any pen. It Is true, when the northwest Is now In the throes of winter and many sections of the state are flooded. It may sc-m in appropriate to talk Irri gation, but on the other hand, this Is the proper sfAfin to study actual con dition)". On the summits of the Blue mountalnH. where we should have sev eral f-et of snow to inmire good crops In Grande Itonilc valley, there are only several Inches of snow. Condi tions have changed and are under a change th;it must be taken Into con sideration. The sawmills are thinning out the forests as A result the snows on the watersheds of Grande Ronde river do not remain as In former years when It was protected from the sun and winds. The result Is the Bnows go off with the flood waters, and the deep, wooded canyons no longer act as natural reservoirs. We have as much snow one year with another, as ever, but It goes off now in a few weeks, whera it required months in years past. During the next JO days thcr will be ample waste water rushing on toj the sea unobstructed, from the rivers and streams of this valley, to Irrigate every foot of it. The time is coming when these waters will not be waste waters, hut will be stored. The begin ning Is to be made tomorrow after noon. Nothing succeeds like success.; Fortunately the bglnnlnir of the first large Irrigation project Is so practical and chesp as compared with other large Irrigation projects that Its suc- BEAUTIFUL SPRING WMSTS ALL ADVANCE SPRING AND SUMMER STUES for seasaiuuisl sdlisg-cculda't come af a more appropriate time, nor would ft be pacsiHe cadet any drcunKfances to qhebetta values. However, the meeting tomorrow night will tell the story. I' we permit this to pass, con ditions may change so that when the strings are once more picked up, there will be exp-nstre rights of way to condemn ai.t .nany obstacles that do not exist today. Now is the accepted lime, and lei. the land owner and the business man Join hands for their mutual benefit and make a success of the meeting tomorrow night. If there was any doubt about the success of this meeting. La Grande could well afford to close pu business tomorrow and see that this meeting is a success. That kind of enthusiasm is the kind that wins. If this irrigation project fuils tomorrow night it will be be cause what Is everybody business is .lobodVs business. There Is mor than enough interest In this project to make It go if those deeply Interest ed will attend. Let eevryone see that they attend, also that their ncighbo: is there. , . - .,!
