Exponent of that party be- haved like men that they are yester ' luy when that most paramount ques tion camo up In separate Kcsslons of both house -of the legislature. For months, Vver slnce'June, In fact, has . the grand old party been the recip ient of gruesome threats anil wow predictions of Instantaneous death If the will of "the peoplu" was not ad- nereu to. I rue enough, all tills was Just nd as It should be, for thpro h no gninrxiylng the duty of. every pledged represt-ntntlvo of the people in those two hcfhIoiis. But, tlm lnnfr list of statement No. I men In both bouses should be given a rising vote of ""thanks' It Is due them, that demo crat and doubting republicans hure their heads In tribute. If reports be true, then there are n few, at leust, who spurned the tt-mptntlon of filthy lucre to follow conscience guiding, ffhrn U'OFA tomntfwl fin Avnlv turn some by verbal suasion, others by mooth-tongued orators, enemies of 1 Chamberlain, perhaps, but certainly versed to seeing a democratic tena- tor go to the senate. How near .to falling many have been Is not known .never will bo, and In fact need not be; the truth remains none went down; Ia Orande's delegation was given the test and found true. Turner Oliver, u staunch democrat, was unqui'tttlonabl.N put to the test less frequently that' Stephen F. Richardson. The formei I an out and out gospel of democra cy; the latter Is not. Furthermore, Richardson did not sign the statement. ' HI verbal assertion that he would abide by the preempts of the now no torlous "statement," sufficed to have tilme vote for Chamberlain, much as It no doubt went against his grain. He Is the representative of Union county, and It was his firm belief that the majority of the people he repre sented wanted him to vote as he did. Had he been possessed with tty rnndli' belief that a majority of his peoplf wanted any other man than Chamber lain, It Is safe to say he would have voted otherwise than he did. THE OKEGOMAN'S STAND. Ttfe Oregonlan discloses Its "mean disposition" and future polttcal poli cies, -!n the following, n portion of the editorial wherein was thrown up the sponge In the fight against Chamber t lain: "It may be that men will not be eager to 'take the pledge' In future us they have been heretofore. TJila will be the only hope of preventing per manent republican division In th" State. Of course, the Oregonlun, hav ing no need of party, cin go It alone: but this may be taken fur certain. t'i;: it will imt net with the republic:!-' party In future, unless this parly . reject or repudiate the method tlta produces such results an this. In nt" words. (twill support Ule oppisltloi, to all 'statement' men of the republl can party who may he candidates for nomination or for election. If e m to elect democrats to our highest of fices, let us do It In the open and di rect manner: not by indirection or Jugitle. The main effort of the earn ft and disinterested republicans of the Male will not hereafter be directed against the democratic party, but ngelnst the Hourne-C'Rcn faction v.-hi i h Insists on a 'pledge that elects !e!K rnvie senator and defeats alt the legitimate hjwt of party e'fort and notion." u No more Chamberlain talk! What next? Prosecution of bank defaulter, perhapu, i As Henator Knox pointedly and con vincingly muM In bin uddress on "The Future of Commerce," jihe federal government unitietJonably entered In to a contract with the several states for the improvement of their water way when It divested them of Juris diction over the subjeof and took Jur isdiction to Itself. That statement be ing lacontestlble, It Is equally Inconte. tlble that In undertaking the too long neglected duty of waterway Improve ment, the government cannot look to any special stream nor to any sperlil project, but must begin and curry to completion, the work of waterway Im provement under a bruud and compre hensive policy under which no water way will bf overlooked nor any water way, nor uny special project, specially favored.
