Train No. i. westbound, hit an open switch at Des chutes, about 11 miles east of hire,, at :SS Sunday morning. The engine plunged Into the ground about eight feet, but was not damaged much. The tender was badlr smashed and the first mall car was thrown on Its side and greatly damaged. The" baggage cms left the track, but did not turn over. The rest of the cars did not l"ave the track. Some of the passengers received hard Jolts In the shake-up. but no om was Injured. The conductor walked a mile nnd u hnif to a farm house and telephoned to The Dalles for the wrecker, which arrived In two hours A track around the wreck was finish ed at 7 o'clock Sunday evening. The trnln crew was composed of Frank Welder, conductor; J. D. Gillian and V. C. Ayre. brakemen; George Fergu son, engineer, and J. E. Bennlck, fire man. M. J. Buckley, general superin tendent, and D. W. Campbell, super Intendent, came with the wrecker from The Dalles. An engine was sent from Umatilla to haul the train back to Plggs. The wreck was caused by the sec tion boss leaving the switch open to thaw It out. He claimed that he had put a flag out and the engineer did not see It. The train had stopped at the tank to take water and was only running 16 miles an hour when they truck the switch. Had It not been for the stop at the tank the train would have hit the switch full speed tnd a bad wreck would have resulted EM11T Sleighing outfits. are In great de mand this week and the liverymen of the city have trouble in filling c .lcrs. Last evening there were at least a dozen turnouts that played tag with each other around the corners. Some ventured farther out In the valley and report good sleighing everywhere. It Is seldom that excellent sleighing lasts TS long as It has this week. It Is still Hufflleently cold to Insure sleighing and profitable ice harvests, yet the mercury has not been forced lo uncomfortable points. Since Sun day morning it has not touched the cro mark.
