La Grande demonstrated Its grow ing prowess In the field of athletics yesterday by hanging one on the fast Pendleton militia football team by the score of 5 to 0. More than that, Pen dleton and La Grande club teams, for years the bitterest enemies, and al ways fighting at the least provocation have played a game where inten tions of slugging were absent and where both teams left the field under amicable circumstances. In this re spec,t the game opened a new era which, It Is believed, will continue as long as athletic relations exist. At any rate, La Grande won a game which should have been theirs by a larger score. Twice La Grande was under the'Bhadow of Pendleton's goal post, but coHtly fumbles averted touch downs Only once did Pendleton get .vlihln the danger line, and then miss ed a try at goal. I.a Grande Outplayed Visitors. At every stage of the game , La Grande showed superiority. Its line was a stone wall thnt could not be penetrated. Elmer Storle, the most formidable line plunger on the Pen dleton team, gained exactly two and one-half yards through La Grande's line, during the game. It Is unneces sary to go Into details cf the game to prove the assertion made. Pendleton made first down but twice. Early li the first half, Turner, the speedy quar ter, got around Nelson's end for e consistent gain, and just before the same was over, Thompson of Pendle ton, picked up a fumble on the Pen lleton 10-yard and sprinted 35 yard before being downed. These two galnr were tha only ones Pendleton made. In contrast to that. La Grande worker .forward pass, tore long gains through Pendleton's line, skirted the ends oc casionally, and made great gains at he punting department, netting In. all. lght first downs. Chllders outpunted the Pendleton man and Reynolds In turn made a sensational record at car rying back Pendleton's punts. Time and again he would bring the ball back to the point where It had been kicked. It Is, therefore, to be seen that La Grande should have won by at least a 12 to 0 score had the team not fumbled In two critical Instances. The one score of the game follojved a fumbled punt, Alstott recovering and sprinting 20 yards for a touchdown. He failed at goal. It was a contest that delighted the limited number ot spectators, fum ing was a great feature of the game and Captain Reynolds branded him self as a competent general by calling' punts on first down reppatedly. jJJI: team mates were with him and once, at least, recovered two successive punts which netted in all 75 yards. La Grande's line was a marvel. Ben Grout, Goodall and Jasper, Elrod, Orandy and Drlscoll, from left tackle to right tackle, are a combination that for aggressive work, and blockers, can not be duplicated In eastern Oregon. Their playing was without a flaw When Storle, the greatest line plunder east of The Dalles, failed to gnln ugalnst them, there Is, necessarily. some stability there. French and Al ston alternated at right end, both playing flawless games, French dis tinguishing himself by a brilliant tackle, and Alston hy pulling down . neat forward pass. - Nelson, played the ther end. Captain Reynolds Tiin. nine gvuind than any other f'Vr -v In ru-u-iii!; punts. Glllilan at right half, played n hard game, tackling mis! ;!rit;v nnl brenklnir formations in a tl'iilling m-ir.ner. Chll-'e-s open ed the game t fullback, hut early In the game displaced Mlckelson. wh( was quite severely Injured while play ing left halfback. "Doc" Racon went in at full and behaved as he always does creditably. Chllders shone as a bright and twlnklnlg spot in the firm ament by his excellent punting, estab- nsnlng a new mark for distance. One; cunt went 60 yards. Just before the , . . game was over, Glllilan was withdrawn 1 In favor of Stltes. who for a few mo- ments left the game, tore up Interfer- ence like a catapult. . Monetarily the affair was a failure. The gate receipts Were approximately I $20 below the actual expense of bring ing the team Mere, ana covering oi in cidental expenses. The La Grande squad goes to Pen dleton next Thursday night to play the unmii team at "that place New Year's ufternoon. Official Fair. The officials yesterday behaved In a manner that was pleasing. C. C. Clark of Union, refereed an errorless game, while Prof. Mansagcr of 'this city, and George Strand of Pendleton, alternated at umpire and field Judge to the entire satisfaction of both teams. Timekeepers were E. E. Bragg and Spell of Pendleton;, head lines man, Jay Reynolds. SELECTED The Observer publishes herewith the three selections of an all-eastern Oregon high school football team. In a letter to The Observer today, Mark Moorhouse of, Pendleton, makes Pen dleton's selection, thus completing the three principal opinions of eastern Oregon. As stated before by The Ob server, the player securing two or more selections holds permanent place. The three teams follow: Jlakcr Man's Choice. Center Flnley of Baker. Guard Graham of Pendleton. Tackle Hall of Raker. End Sturgls of Pendleton. . , Guard Devlne of Pendleton. Tackle Ingle of La Grande. End Jett of Baker City. Half Smith -it Ontario. Half Xiles of Weston. t Qua: ter Denham of Baker. Full Baker of Pendleton. Couch WttU'8 Selection. End Jett of Baker. End Sturgls of Pendleton. Tackle Bean of Pendleton. Guard Williamson of La Grande. Center Bean of La Grande. Guard Graham of Pendleton. Tackle Ingle of La Grande. Quarter Denham of Baker. ' Half Chllders of La Grande. Full Baker of Pendleton. Half Jones of Baker. Honorable mention Walters, Cove; Reynolds, Meyers and Hamilton, all of La Grande. Pendleton's Choice. End E. Niles, Weston. Tackle Devlne of Pendleton. Guard Hall of Baker City. Center V. Bean of La Grande. Guard Ingle of La Grande. Tackle Bean of Pendleton. End Jett of Baker City. Quarter Klmbrell of Pendleton. Half Nlles of Weston. Half Finch of Baker. Flul Baker of Pendleton. In making his choice Mr. Moorhouse says of the two La Grande men given places by him on the honorary team: With Rean at center and two good strong, steady guards, such as Hall of Baker City and Ingle of La Grande would make; men that could last the game out protecting their center, breaking through when the center was unable we would have a stone wall In the middle of the line that few teams would try more than twice to put a play over. While both Hall and Ingle played the position of tackle they were not quite heavy enough nor were they well enough acquainted with the game to play on this team, older and heav ier men have crowded them to guard positions. Other good guards, would he Hindman of Raker City, Hlnderman of Pendli r-n I Hean of La Grande. rORM ATHLETIC CONFERENCE. Movement on Fool to Perfect a O r'jtn n i za '. io n A 1 1 1 let lea II y .
