ZTJ'NN, E:ui'.t3 ".u'e-. a. E. M CULLY, Rec. 8.c. 65c per Month flHD CEMERT Elgin, Doc 14. (Special.) lite is much excitement about ElfU. ov caaloned by the discovery of an ex cellent bed of the best of cement properties. While the facts are not obtainable. uch a illreovery JoveljjK'U would mean s great deal to the coun try about' Elgin and the eastern por tion of Oregon. The barn of John Frashler was com pletely destroyed by fire about 12 o'clock Thursday night, with all Its contents many tons of hay. The chicken house was also destroyed with about three or four dozen "chickens. The total loss of $450 or $500 Is not covered by Insurance. Elgin has been crowded the pnst woek with newcomers looking for homes, and with Christmas shoppers. The new real estate firm of The Slough Investment company, has just erected a new ' electric sign which bears evidence of this firm's progress- iveness. , WIIAT'S IX A NAME. -Dlsrawo Not an Entity. To the layman, and to many phy sicians, there is a disease entity, Indi vidual and alone, 'not depending upon other conditions, indeed, so distinct that if the roll was called "typhoid" it would answer "here" and step for ward, while another would respond to malaria and so on through the list. Nothing could be more misleading, for the line Is often difficult to draw between certain diseases. This belief has led to grievous mistakes under drug treatment, for each disease calls for its own little dose and a mistaken diagnosis may call for flowers next day. That this statement Is not over drawn Is shown by the folowing from Clinical Medicine" of November, 1908: Some Medical Authority. "After all, the name of a disease Is only a name, and a name which often hides a great deal of Ignorance. How many In our days treat a sickness by the name It has, or Is supposed to have an1 nut aside the study of the symp- t' tr.s? Tho greater, the more sonorous is name, the greater humbug the men' can play on the people. It has often been said, there Is a great deal In a name; this may be true In many Instances, but It applies poorly in med icine. I am quite positive that more than 60 per cent of the names given to the different ailments treated by physicians would prove to be wrong if an opportunity were given to make an autopsy for every case." . "By treating a disease, a sickness, or any ailment by Its symptoms, 'we shall always be In the right track, we shall not be compelled later on to change our diagnosis, as It happens fre quently, and unfortunately be obliged iu vimnge treatment, because our mind was absorbed more ty tne name than by the symptoms. It is always time : to give a name, but it may be too late to apply the proper remedy which I would have very likely been applied If less pathology and more ' common ptnse has been In our heads." Commenting on the above, the editor writes: "More time should be spent at the ht daide. How many of us have really exhausted the possibilities of observa tion in any case. Too often we bound out of the buggy, rush Into the sick room, take the temperature, look at the tongue, feel the pulse, venture a 'diagnosis,' write a prescription and we're off! "This Is all wrong. It Is fundamen tally based upon the mistaken Idea that If we are able to make a diagno sis the treatment Is a matter of course Just as it appears In Osier's 'Prac tice.' in not one case in 500 can we safy treat a patient In this way, al though we may do It successfully in most" Herald of Osteopathy.
