, The postal department at Washing
ton has made overtures wiih the own
.ei'B of the building now occupied by
the Pendleton postoffiee for a renewal
of the lease for a term of five years,
guys the Tribune.
; This announcement comes as a sur
prise to the residents of, Pendleton
who have expected news that a site
for the new federal building .has, be-rn
selected and that work on "the con
struction of the postoffice building
would soon be under way. The fact
that Congressman Ellis secured an ap
propriation of $70,000 for the con
struction of this building at the last
session of congress and the still fur
ther recollection that a government
agent was here looking over the desir
able sites prompted Pendletonians to
assume that Uncle Sam would In the
pear future favor us with one of his
official structures.
These expectations may not be real
ized within the five-year period of the
lease unless active measures are taken
by our citizens to interest the author
ities In the resumption of the prepar
ations for the public Improvement.

Seventy-one couples danced last

the day, bo successful was it from
social standpoint, and the treasury de
partment of the park .association is
wearing broad smiles on account of
nearly (60 that were turned in to
them. Exquisitely gowned ladies
were numerous. All in all there was
a color of "society" about the ball
that easily brands It as the leading and
most successful ball given thus fur
chis season. Two of the hostesses
were ill and unable to attend Mrs.
Una Scriber and Miss Dorothy Zuber,
The hostesses In the receiving line
were: Miss Lulu Gulling, Frances Mas
see, Gertrude Ralston, Florence Mo
Call, Floy Masses and Mae Whiw
Tiie patronesses who assisted in re

enkamp, J. J. Carr, John Donncily,
Robert Newlin and E. Polack. The
patronesses' especially were beautifully
attired. Today liberal and upen
hearied people who were unable to at
tend, sint in donations of $1 as evi
dence of their good faith. These dt-
nations especially have been well re
