"I am In favor of a curfew,' a good, at ron r curfew and one that is in use," declared Judge Glillland of the uve nlle court thla morning to the East Oregpnlan of Pendleton. "I think that not only should every town have a curfew but there should be one In very home, especially in towns like thin where the curfew ordinance Is not rigidly enforced. "Here' what, I would recommend. It's a curfew I've been reading about In this newpuper hee, and it stlkeB me that it la the best emedy I have tuck yet. I believe I know what 1 'apeak of, too, for there are" mighty few cases that hove come before the Juvenile court where this remedy would not have sufficed. , More than -that, these crufews are home-made and inexpensive. Getour your pencil and I'll, give you directions ao that anyone In the county can fix up one lor his own home. I'm ao confident of the value of these that, If anyone can't afford but needs one and will , use It, I'll provide It, myself. For the others, however, here are the dl , xectlopa: t ; Take a piece of siding two feet long and whittle one end down to a handle; take the child that needs the curfew and bend it over a barrel. Now take the elding In hand and use it as a clapper. Put It on hot, divide the strokes e"enly and see that none miss, flood for a boy or girl up to the age of 16, and three applications are war ranted to cure the most pronounced case of street loafing that evlsts. The music is said to be finer than singing "Where ! My Wandering Boy To night?" -a A With a 1180,000 municipal water plant, the bonds for which have al roadv been sold, with a $400,000 irri gation project, with one-half of the required acreage already secured; with a public park backed by the most patriotic band of women, veterans who never lower their flag on any proposition, and a new high school building, La Grande and Union coun- ty will enter upon the new year with a realization that much is to be ac complished during the next few months. The period of Inactivity that always precedes a presidential elec tion Is a thing of the past. The great northwest Is to be the scene of activi ty on every hand during 1909, and we re in line for progress second to no community within this great common wealth. The man who today owns real estate In this city and valley, by aiding the development that is now being promoted, with every assurance of success, will see lit holdings grow in value rapidly within the next 12 months. i Po a booster. Everyone should romdder himself a committee of 1 one to foster the Irrigation and park pro .' Jeets. Jf every one will make It a point to lend n kind word upon every opportunity and. In fact, make your opportunities, both will be secured easily. The merits of both are such that naught can be said. Many a beautiful flower however, withered simply from the lack of Just a Utile attention. ' . - Thla spring like weather does not suggest Christmas, nevertheless thre remain but 17 more purchasing days. Bbrewd buyer will enter the markets early and shrewd dealer should also snake It a point to encourage early keying. i Five ton of advertising matter de scriptive of the wonderful resource of Orgeno were shipped out of Port land this week. It l no wonder that Oregon Is growing In population. With Increased population develop ments follow. i If you have any doubta about the profitableness. of the poultry bunlness In I'nlon county, step Into any gro cery store and ask the price of eggs or dressed poultry. McKen- non, chairman of the soliciting com mittee to secure the 20,000 acres re quired under the proposed Irrigation project. Anyone hearing the emphatic manner Ir which he spoke those words could not but have taken renewed faith tn the early suiccess of tho un dertaking. Next week Chairman Me Kennon will start his committee out. and it Is to be a finish flghl until the remaining 10,000 acres of land Ih se cured. PleUlor Seltxtod. Last night the Commercial club se cured the services of Engineer Tick ler to run the line for the ditches and laterals. Everybody has taken renewed In terest In the entire project and one and all feel and express their confi dence that the entire matter is to be closed up right away. There has never been any opposltior toithe project. Everyone "recognize the benefits to be derived and all have been hopeful from the start, but af ter the first attempt, which resulted In such a large acreage so easily, every one seemed willing to let the other fellow do the work, with the re sult that little progress was made. It was the busy season, too, and what seemed at that time apathy, has once more been turned into enthusl asm. Mr. McKennon expressed the sentiment that finds immediate re soonse by all who have given the mat ter consideration, when he stated that this Is the biggest thing that this val ley has ever attempted to secure. Something that will make It possible for more people to make a living off of the, same acreuse Lima anything that possibly could be done. Think of the government project a few miles west of Pendleton, at Hermlston, the purchasers are limited to 40-arre tracts and it was only this week that a lino of people snt up all night In front of the door of the United States land office, In order to be the first to have an opportunity to make their filings on the Irrigated land. They paid $60 per acre for It. Our propo sition only costs $20 per acre for the land and we have 10 years to pay for It. There are mighty few acres of land that cannot be made to pay for this perpetual water right In one year. Another point In our favor as com pared to some irrigation projects I the absolute assurance of securln&am ple water. We have the water ever year in abundance. A natural reser voir, n natural channel for 20 miles, and a valley that lies Ideal for dis tribution. All we want is the Interest to direct lis completion and we have that. Talk with the members of the committtec an 1 imbibe some of their enthusiasm and you will readily un derstand how all of this is to be brought about. GOYKKNMKNT AFTKU HATA.
