While very little has been said re garding the special election which will be held . next Tuesday to decide whether or not La Grande Is to have , ., a new charter, It Is a 'mention that Is , of vital interest to this city. Had the proposed new charter been passed we would now be supplied with water " from Beaver creek. While the passage of the new charter may not defeat the . present bond ' issue, it may; and It Is evident that the bidders are awultinp . the result of the election Tuesday; 1 . owing to the fact that they have done little. If anything to perfecting their . purchnfw i.ini'p their biil wuw accepted, y The city has certainly followed the law carefully. , Every voter has been given an opportunity'. to know, what the proposed new charter contains. ; It not only published the entire chnr ... ter, but 1000 copies were Issued, in pamphlet form and distributed. Thou "; who' have not read It over may ennlly find a "copy and between now and y Tuesday look It over carefully,. Little If any objection can be raised to the. charter as a whole. WJjaf opposition may be presented to the charter will ndoubteny represent the opposition i to the Beover creek project. The last ,: time the chaater 'was represented things 'drifted, along Jm?t about a? they ard now and when the votes were counted, to the surprise of not a few, It was defeated. Under the present apathy a similar result could easily be accomplished, : If the people really :" degji-j Jno passage of the charter .-they hust take suffk'knt interest to got the i vote out. If they are, .Indifferent, the result need not surprise anyone, whlch . ever way It ' goes. , Every Voter in the city is entitled to vote on it. Before 'women who Were tjixpayers were al lowed the prlvelldga but K-ksI author ities claim that such a vie' It not war- oiamrti uji increi'ue women will not b permitted to vote this lime, -A ; no electioneering 1$ legal In this state i On election day, the f rteQd or enemies ' of .the. proposed new charter mut do their organizing between now unl Tuesday morning. ;..','- - There are thousands of parents who are thankful In their hearts that the next few days, will witness the passing of the football season. It no doubt has seen Its climax for a time at least. For the past few years It has held tin attention of the public n greater ex tent that baseball, but this year baso--.' ball held the stase by a very l.use . tnujortty. There, are two reasons for this. One Is that the people genrrully understand the game. It is safe to say as a rule not 20 per cent of those at tending football know .Very much about It, their Interest waves up and down in proportion to the number of Injured carried away from the field. The other reason Is that many parents and school men favor baschnll in pref erence to football, believing it the less dangerous of the two. The lumber Interests of the north West are among the first to notl.e h revival of trade fi.ll'.wlng the recent presidential election. The lar;e luro , ber yards In the east allowed their stocks to be reduced to the lowest min imum and In case Mr. Bryan had been j 4 ....Aected ti-ey M-nnld Ha v . bos-n-fur.,. " a while at least, in restocking, but I -with Taft's election It Is reported that I v orders are being rushed to the western t mills. This is corroborated by the number of loaded cars of lumber n'-vv I t v going east -as compared with tt few ; a week ago... $ 4 , KCXDAT AT THE CHlltCIIE.S. 4 fiC Fetera Cbnrch.
