"Wulla Wulla, Nov. 19. The Bulletin
said last night: ,
Itev. Anson Phelps gtokes, Jr., sec-
retary of Tale university, was the
principal speaker nt the Educational
1 1 vol this afternoon. Ho spoke on
the Importance of having a private
christian Institution sufficiently en
dowed that It may Influence In some
measure the educational policy of the
territory In which it is located. Mr.
Stokes argued that one of the things
to avoid waif the idea that bigness is
essential to the success of the college.
This Idea, he claimed, Is the bane of
American life. - i
High standards of education and
character should be ' sought. Mr.
Stokes argued that the establishment
of a great college would not be antag
onistic to the state Institutions In this
section. He said that such a college as
was planned would greatly influence
education. ;
Walla Waila citizens for the first
time this morning saw the plans for
the new Whitman, a stereoptlcon being
used to prject them on a large screen
In the chapel. The plans showed up
vrv rlemiv and the location of the
various buildings In relation to those
now in existence was easily seen.' E.
T. Lawrence, a Portland architect,
who drew the plans, explained them.
The Educational congress will end
this evening with an Immense banquet
to be served in the Whitman gymna
sium to BOO people in honor of Dr. D.
K. Pearsons of Chicago, who "is ex
pected to make : an important - an
nouncement regarding his future plans
toward Whitman at this gathering.
Addresses will be made by other prom
inent visitors. The banquet will be
served by 45 girls and the'same num
ber of young men from Whitman col
lege. .
North Powder Shipments.
One hundred and four carloads of
grain and hay were shipped from
North Powder in October, which is an
Increase over the same month' in last
year.' There was a marked Increase
in cuttle and horses but the shipment
of sheep were greatly decreased on
account of the lack of dipping facili
ties. Powder Valley sheepmen are now
driving to Baker City to dip and are
shipping from this point. Baker
