B. Stoddard of this city, F. 8. 'latett cashier of the Canyon City 'Irst National bank, has sent the fo! wlng letter, requesting publication f It: . Canyon City, Nov. 4. (To the Edi tor of The Observer.) I notice In the Issue 'of the trd. Morning Democrat Baker City, an exchange quotation from your recent Interview with J.; B. Stoddard. In which the statement Is ascribed to him that the First Nation al bank of Canyon City, was one of the banks promoted by 3. W, Scrlber and that In It promotion not a dollar of actual capital was Invested. So far as that statement of Mr. Stod dard's relate to' the First National Bank of Canyon City, there Is np 'oundatlon for It. It Is untrue, and Mr. Stoddard was In no position to a Lcertaln what the capital of this bank consisted of at Its promulgation.. Mr. Icrlber's subscription to the capital stock of this bank was small In com parison to the whole. The stock was almost wholly taken by local parties, rt ho paid In the cash. I have not the lxact data Just at hand, but I re mem ber that a portion of Mr. Scrlber's lock was paid for in exchange of ac counts with either the First Bank ol lumpter or the Frmers & - Traders National. The amount I think was Ibout $2500 In Exchange which was 'eallzed upon In the course of busi ness during . the ; first ; few weeks ol this bank's 'career. Local stockhold ers here took up a majority of Mr. icriber's stock In this bank In March, 905r and In December of the same ear the remainder of 10 shares was t!so taken from Urn by our own poo le, It all being taken at par.
