Generally speaking, wore people re
joiced over the election of Governor
Hushes,' than ''they did over Taft'a suc
cess. This was natural. The -democrats
were loyal to their leader, but
Hushes bA made a great fight for de
cency and It would have been a blight
on good citizenship' of Nw York state
to have defeated him. Nevertheless,
the gamblers put p a terrible fight
and tbtlr candidal. Mr. Chanler. wax
a bright, capable, clean man, and thl
gave them a wonderful leverage, Tvt,
under the circumstances, 50,000 for
Hughes, places th great Empire stat
on a moral plane that the country 1
proud of. Hughes and Rooevelt are
great fighters for right, and the coun
try Is under lasting obligations to both.
They have mode it easy for other to
follow. '

After every previous defeat It ha
"been predicted that Bryan would be
permanently retired, but ne one is
brave enough in the face of our past
history to make such a prediction at
"this time.1 Mr. Bryan has been hon
ored by his party as no : other , man,
and while he has led them to defeat
thrice, who can say with any degree of
knowledge that another could nave
accomplished more. , .
Unless the official '. count makes
