turns from farming districts showed

Colorado Still Doubtrul.
Denver, Nov. 4. At 8 this morning
less than a third of the total ballots In
Colorado were counted. Those of the
important precincts, chairmen of both
state committees are claiming the state
-by from 8000 to 12,000.
.In the state 472 precincts out of
1123 give Taft 29,191, and Bryan 28,
308: scattered ballots, 65,707. Returns
from 14 Denver preelricti Indicate a
democratic victory m the city. , e
publlcan congressmen, except one
democrat, will probably be elected.
The democratic legislature will elect
a successor to Senator Teller.
Ohio State Ticket Doubtful.
Columbus, O., Nov. 4. Democratic
leaden today concede Taft carried the
state by 50,000. V

lor governor, was elected by an equally
large plurality. '
Returns from the farming sections
are slow in coming in Harris, repub
lican nominee for governor, was
slaughtered in the cities by the liberal
element. Republicans believe the re
turns from the rural districts will off
set th's, but the result is still doubt

largest plurality, ever given a presiden
tial candidate In New York, where It
was announced, late this afternoon
that It exceeds 213,398. exceeding the
landslide plurality given; Roosevelt
four years ago. It Is a big surprise.

Chicago, Nov. 4. According to fig
ures given out at headquarters of the
republican congressional committee,
the next house will be made up of 218
republicans and 17$ democrats. .
Put Kern In Senate.
Indianapolis, Ind., Nov. 4. John S
Kern, the defeated candidate for the

ticket. wiU probably go to the United
States senate, succeeding Hemenway,
according to the returns today.
Though Taft will carried the state
by from 6000 to 10,000, Incomplete re
turns indicate that Marshal, democrat,
has a majority of 20,000 to 80,000 for

Movement for the election of Kern
to the senate has already been started.
Representative Overstreet of the
Seventh district, who Is chairman of
the house committee on mails, wiil
probably be defeated.,, though the re
turns are incomplete, the state repub
lican ticket, excepting governor, will
be solidly elected. ;
Washington for Taft by 45,000.
Seattle.. Wash., Nov. 4. The latent
returns indicate Tart wins in Wash
ington by 45,000, sweeping the -state
! from east to west, electing the entire
state republican ticket. The legislature
is overwhelmingly republican.

This la one of the.llghtest votes ever
cast In Union countyw It was a beau
tiful day. The weather was perfect.
The returns show that the apathy was
not confined to, one party, but to all.
Right here in La Grande there were
several hundred who did not take t)te
trouble of casting their Votes. In all,
about 3000 votes were cast, while the
egistration showed 3815, and besides
this, there were many throughout the
county who "swore their, votes In"
