Senator Gearln at the'opera house last evening sustained his well-earned reputation as one of the most brilliant orators within the state. The opera house was filled. It'vwas possibly the largest political gathering that has as sembled to hear a purely political par tisan discussion that has met in this city since the free silver campaign, when such men as Coxey and Bryan spoke. !.,;';..."', ' . Unlike most, democratic speakers who have visited this city, Senator Gearin -dld-'notr apologle - for being a democrat, but was 'proud of the fact and appealed to thi to vote for Mr. Bryan because Mr. Bryan was a democrat and also for the principles for which Mr. Bryan stood. In this respect it was different from the policy that has been pursued for the past, four or eight years by state democratic speakers who talked "pa triotism." and emphasized the fact that there was no difference any more between the two dominant parties that yvery voter should vote for the man not for party. Thus it was in strik ing contrast to hear Senator Gearln speak out in no uncertain tones, com mending party organization and par ty responsibility. No one went away sore from his re marks. He stated his policy clear and strong from his standpoint and those who attended were entertained and en3oyed his address, whether they co incided with his doctrine or not. - Attorney J. D. If promises made by. automobile owners of this city and county, and a few promottrM of good roads are sub stantiated with cash, La Grande will iiave Its good roads convention as per schedule. At a neetlng of the board of directors of the Commercial club last Monday, a committee of two, G. . C'k-uvtr and W. H. Bohnenkamp, .vere appointed to. wait on the automo bile owners to ascertain the spirit among that element. Encouragement has met the committee at every turn, and when it makes its report to the club bourd It will be one which will Insure the convention. . . AutobOs Liberal. Loral autolsts, like the same class of roadsters in other, sections of east ern Oregon, are liberal In promises and enthusiastic In their support No one knows what good roads mean, from a standpoint of pleasure, better than the owner of an automobile, and the Commercial club will be benefited In u r-tfnrt to wit ths convention later In ths month, by tha aid from ths chug-chug wagon owners. Approximately $100 Is needed to de fray tha expense of ', bringing the speakers and educators along good roads lines, to this city.
