(Special correspondence. ) The Portland Com mercial club finished Its new building with Oregon or Douglas fir, and In addition to this used this same ex quisitely grained wood in making some high-class permanent furniture for its main parlor. Nine out of 10 visitors admire it more than they do mahog any." During the visit of E. H. Harrl man he requested that samples be sent him for the consideration of his ar chitects who are now building his country home, Which will probably be the finest residence in America. Last Saturday President B. L. Winchell, of the Rock Island system, made a visit to the club and particularly admired this same wood. He gave notice to an official of the Harriman lines who was present, that if they didn't hurry the Rock Island would have the first dining car or sleeper finished In the chief wood of the Pacific northwest of which there is sufficient yet left to turn out more and richer million aires than has the iron and steel dis trict, of which Pittsburg is the center. Edward Em of Devonshire, Eng land, member of the Society of Brit ish Roya) Artists and of International rentHn., cs.:'i o miicti about the beauties of the Pacific northwest that he is now making a very leisurely stay in this region! ' The Columbia river, Crater lake and other famous scenic attractions of the North Pacific coast, he says, have-no equal. A meeting of the representatives of all the Pacific coast commercial bod ies will be held In San Francisco on Monday, October 5. There will be del egates in attendance from several of the important organizations of Wash ington and Oregon. On Tuesday morn ing opens in the same city for a five days' session, the Trans-Mlsslsaippl Commercial ' congress, t which given promise of being one of the most re sultful gatherings of that Influential body. Delegations from Washington and Oregon are materially Increased by the fact that the congress has held meetings in both Portland and Seat tle. - Don't allow the political campaign now on to make you overlook the col onist rates In effect during September and October, and remember that your friends and acquaintances throughout the older states can come to any part of the Pacific northwest on one-way tickets at less cost now than at any other time during the coming winter. Vancouver, Wash., one of the old pioneer towns made famous by having General Grant and General Sherman located at the barracks there, Is giv ing some of the newer towns a sample of civic enterprise. Not satisfied with pulling down hard-surfaced pave ments, on last Saturday they celebrat ed the completion of an electric street railway system, which reaches well into the suburbs. Davison of No. 879 Glf ford Ave., San Jose, Cal., says: "The worth of Electric Bitters as a general family remedy, for headache, bilious ness and torpor of the liver and bow els Is so pronounced that I am prompted to say a word In Its favor, for the benefit of those seeking relief from such affliction.
