David Brlchoux killed his bar cub
In Wallowa county with. a club and
not with a revolver. Though he hafc
been showered with praise for a so
called good aim, he Is deserving of
still more praise tor a nervy bit of
slaughtering. He found two cubs up
a tree nd hurried to the spot to pre
vent either coming down and escap
ing. Ho corraled one but the other
dropped to the ground from a droop
ing limb. He gave chaxe and aimed,
but his weapon refused to work. , See
ing such efforts were futile he 're
turned and slew the other with a club
as It was coming down the tree trunk.
Fortunately for him the mother
Bruin was not around. He takes it
for granted that the mother had
parted company with her offspring,
due to the advanced growth which the
animals had attained. '

rived today from Portlund, and dur
ing the day have been distributed to
various sub-farms of the la Virandc
district. ' Manager Hebbelov Is muk
Ing huxte to commence beet pulling
about Tuesday or Wednesday and the
arduous task Is being hur; i 1 on ac
count of the frosts. No'.,:'.; it the slight
nlpplngs are Injui l but they re
tard additional growth. Therefore, as
there Is no likelihood of more
growth, th6 (owl puny will hurry the
harvest to completion, If possible, bo
fore the rainy season. If the crops
are harvested before rains set In, the
grand total 'of beets will be equal to
former years, though slightly cur-
(tailed compared with lust yeiir's rec-
ord breaker. Favorable weather will
allow a complete harvest, hence the
early commencement and tbe larn
number of laborers to make possible
utmost speed when once started.
