These cool evenings suggest furs. ' As usual, In fact always, the La Grande fire department was there with (be goods again last night. It , Is bo longer "the public be damned." These are political house cleaning days. As President Roosevelt One TmtT-rrA ..kvu uuys," President Roosevelt made one gwlpe. with his "Wg stick" and Haskell re signs. It is not probable that Mr. Bryan will ask the president to prove .. . any more pf Ms assertions, ' ..... . ' ..k .... . ; -w Foraker had better follow Haskell, And reslgti from the United States enate. It will save him lots of worry ;-hd money. The result will be the ' tame. He will never be returned, j -j-.The nexi legislature wll be re " Quired to reaMlM the, state. ' If pos ting vii'ultf be desirable to form i turee congressional districts. This would practically permit Portland and a few close-tn counties to form a sep- . arate district. As long as eastern Oregon Is linked up with Portland, we can never exactly tell Just where we . Are at. However, since the second dis trict has been organized, Portland has never stepped In, because of her large ! Vote, and captured the congressional nomination. She has demanded and secured the naming of' United States senators, but even if she could under the primary nominating system, plead ' not guilty to this. Timely arrival of the fire depart ment, but above all, fortunate atmos pheric conditions, are responsible for the intactness of a whole residence block, on First street, between Malts and Washington avenues. About 2:30 this morning, fire was discovered be tween the outhouse and woodshed, of the E. V, Davis property, at the cor ner of First and Main. Pedestrians awoke Mr. Sllverthorn, who recently moved into the place, and when he emerged on the scene it was only to find the building beyond the saving point. Engines in the O. R. & N. yards saw the blaze and let loose a populace- awakening blast. The fire bell pealed out Its weak alarm on the early morn ing air, and In a very short time two streams of water were playing on the Davis house. To attempt to save the woodshed and outhouse was futile, and the large residence needed Immediate attention. Garden hose was brought into play until the more efficient streams of water were pumped on the scorcnea residence. The damage to the residence alone la considerable. There Is no insurance on the de stroyed buildings which are valued at $125; but one cord of wood was con sumed.' '.' j.....' The air was still or else the fire would have been conflagration. So close was the ble to the Davis house that prompt action alone saved the building. Had a wind been blowing In the right direction the J. C. Clancy residence, the John Shea property and h l''?r5 SctfW vvjriy would now haye been In ashes. The origin is a mystery. Mrs, Sil- yerthorn had emptied a shovel of wood ashes in close proximity to the out house, but on the opposite side from where the fire started. No credence Js given the theory 'that the wood ashes were left smoldering and eventually Ignited the buddings, as the aahet were dumped there In the morning previous, ... . ATCIIES NUMEROUS SUXDAY.
