x LOCAL ITEMS. . Mrs. M. A. Harrison, Jr., went to Island City this morning, to spend the day with relatives there. . Miss Lucy MeClure of La Grande, Is here visiting at tlft home of Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Titus. Eugene Guard. Mtb. S. R. Haworth and daughter, Doroughthy and Nora Arbuckle, are spending the day with Elgin friends. Mrs. P. ,W. Petrle and sister, Miss Josephine Hodgkins, left this morning for Los Angeles for an extended visit. Miss Bessie Lincoln . returned thlx morning from Portland, where she has been visiting the past two weeks. ' This has been, as usual, a quiet ses sion of the county court, and having finished all of the business," adjourn ment was taken this afternoon. Mrs. E. Y. Stoddard, who has been visiting her daughter, Mrs. W.'K. Da vis, for the past month, returned this morning to her home at Logan, Utah. C. O. Ramsey, of the Ramsey Olden berg Warehouse company, will return tomorrow morning from Portland, where, he has been looking up mar kets for local fruit. ', W. W. Berry and F. E. Wllhelm, the latter hand cutter of the Andrews & Berry tailoring establishment, left to day for Enterprise, where the firm is conducting a branch department. Mr. and Mrs. S. C. Williams, who af ter spending a few days at Long Beach, visited Mr. and Mrs. Tom Williams, who are resldin'g at Salem. They re turned home last night. , Mrs. Virginia Qulnlan, an old-tln friend of Mrs. F. E. Moore, arrived this morning to visit in La Grande, gheis from Kansas City and knew Mrs. Moore as a girl. She will spend some time In the city. The land office is in the middle of a dull period, from a ' standpoint of proofs being made. However, during the recent rush, work congested to such a degree that the force is still figuratively covered up with back work. ' . Mrs. W. ". Deal, who has been vis iting T.ev. and Mrs. C. E. Deal, left this morning., She will be Joined at Union by her husband, and they will proceed to Nampa, where Rev. Deal will enter upon his duties as pastor of the Methodist church. W. D. Chapman, who seven years ago operated a photograph gallery tn this i4ty, Is here today from Walla Walla, taking a few scenes of beauti ful Grande Ronde valley for a postal card firm. Mr. Chapman, since leav ing here, has been proprietor of a gallery In Walla Walla, and this trip Is In the nature of a few days' outing. W. W. Berry, of the tailoring firm of Andrews A Berry, accompanied by their cutter, Frank. Wllheliii. left thlf morning for points In Wallowa coun ty. It Is their intention' to open a branch house In Enterprise. Last fall this firm did an excellent business, and If they are as successful this sea son, will locate there permanently. Engineer Hnderhnnd, who 'last year was a regular freight engineer out of this point, has anil In returned and will soon icmimc his run. He left here last Christinas for points In Iowa, Wisconsin and other middle western states. Later he went to Arizona and fior.i there returned to Portland by way of California. M. R. & N. company. - Send Aspirants on Stump. Chicago, Sept. 3. Chairman Hitch cock is planning on a grand speaking tour of presidential aspirants who opposed Taft's nomination. They are: Fairbanks, La Follette, Foraker and Knox. The leaders, think the quartet will make a strorg argument for the ticket showing all are working to gether, ' Democrats Invade Maine. The democratic national organization Is planning to make a sweeping; campaign In Maine between now and the state election, September 15. . .The foremost orators will be sent to Maine to make a deter mined effort to carry It for Bryan." Hi LOAD Summervllle, Sept. 3. (Special.) Arthur Woddell. the 18-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Doon Woddell, near here, was quite seriously hurt this afternoon, and though he Is In bed and unable ,to move, it Is believed by Dr. Hall, who was called, that the young man has sustained no Internal Injuries, and will, therefore, soon be able to move about. . He had been hauling grain with a four-horse team, and when about to start for the stack, the wagon Jolted, throwing him to the ground. He fell at an agle before the wheel and fortunately was not run over. Before the team was stopped the wheel had skidded him a short distance. When he was picked up It was found that no bones were broken, but the hip badly bruised.
