Cnrtlna SlflcHtei: for Ren Brown's Theory of Xumlng City. The Observer In In receipt of per sonal letter from W. W. dirties of Portland, who yesterday advanced one reason why La Grande received the name It did. The letter la self-cxplnn-atory and' follows: Portland. Aug. 21 (Editor ObHerv er.) I see by the paper' received this evening that Undo Ben Brown had come through with how La Grande got Its name. I was extremely sorry that I had not held my letter for one more day, and would have made it read a little different. Uncle Ben Is doubt less right as to the way It was named. as that was the usual custom In the pioneer days. My authority was de rived from the records of tho govern ment establishing a townslte and post office and giving It the name "Le Grand." As to the meaning of the name and also the Information I endeavored to give about Grande Ronde, I have n doubt but I am right. , Yours truly, W. W. CURTIS.
