OPTICIANS resetting and repairing IRON WORKS .a SOCIAL! The La Grande students of the In ternational Correspondence schools of Scranton, Pa., held an old-time family reunion at the L. D. S. amusement hall last night The' students' wives, moth ers, and sinters and the. lady students furnished the cakes and coffee and the men the Ice-cream. Everybody ate as long as they could, but there was an abundance of foodstuffs left. The meeting was purely an Informal one. Work done by the students was on exhibition and the fore part of the evening was taken up by examining the work, everyone getting acquainted. Later, Mrs. W. T. Bteloer of Seattle, rendered a very enjoyable selection on the piano. C. R. Thornton acted as chairman of the meeting and made a short talk, stating the purpose of the meeting. He introduced Attorney XXuJ.!r. :? ithonh not a student, consented to deliver an address on the "Value of Hocse Study and the Ekidy Habit" . Mr. Hodglns gave a very able and interesting talk. He showed clearly that It, Is the home student who wins That history holds no example of a man, noted olthcr for his learning or accomplishments In law or selonco, at the time of his graduation from col lege. That no man has ever won suc cess, who stopped studying at the time of his graduation. He has merely learned how and what to study and that fame, wealth and honors are won afterwards by hard work and home study. Some of the most Illustrious examples in history Franklin, and Lincoln and Thomas A. Edison were men almost entirely without school ing, and what thtxo men accnm piiHnea an can i-. ctumilMi to a greater or lesser degree. Thnt ambi tion and determination spell nucceps. The gathering broke up at 12 o'clock with every one declaring they had had a grand, good time, and ex pressing a cjeslre for a permanent or ganization In order that these enjoy able meetings might be repeated reg ularly. Although a great many of the stu dents are out of town and quite a number were otherwise detained. there were SO present 1 NOT IN POUTICS. Politic When There la Nothing Else Lpft to Do. Hon. Walter M. Pierce, formerly a resident of Pendleton and an ex-state senator, is In the city ion a business trip. He gives his friends the Impres sion that he will vote for Bryan this fall If all goes well with him, though his opinion Is that the man who goes Into politic when there Is anything else under the sun to go Into, Is a blankety blank of the blankest char acter. And the ex-senator, with oth ers, Is In a position to know. He re ports everything In fine condition in Orande ' Ronde valley. Pendleton Tribune. LOW RATES EAST Will be Mad by the O. R.&N.
