Yesterday, while coming In with Conductor Grady, the train stopped no less than three times to put out fires which, If permitted to run wild, would have threatened several grain fleldB. In the cupola of every caboose sits a man apparently with nothing to do, but his eagle eye Is watching the rear of the train and to him Is dally en trusted thousands of dollars' worth of grain. Far mers are half through harvesting their oats, and with three threshing ma chines working In the tmemldate vi cinity, there Is no delay In sight. Farmers In this prosperous community are extremely happy. Their wheat has run from SO, In the lowVst In stances, to 43 bushels per acre, and thus far In the oats fields the thresh ers find the yield will run from SO to 45 bushels. Activity In harvest Is not confined to the fields alone, but to the large granaries as well, for teams are dally hauling buBhels by the hundreds to the elevators. The crew which' Is repairing the mill recently purchased by the Imbler Flouring Mill company. Is exerting all Its energies to complete the work as rapidly as possible that the large quantities of wheat can be made into flour at once. b Other News Notes. Thought In La Grande Last Night Thut Thresher Waa Afire. A burning straw pile In the vicinity of Imbler las? evening, caused consid erable wonder In this city. The Im pression was prevalent that a thresh ing outfit was afire, but reports to day allay those fears. The 'Illumina tion of the sky waa nothing else than a burning straw pile. y. Call for Bids.
