Jackrahblta Atuu-k Trm, Jackrabblts In large numbers are overrunning the ' Lewlston orchard section, and protection to the young fruit trees has bn nude necessary. says the Lewlston Teller. . The rabbity are particularly fond of the bark of the young trees, and their depredations have resulted In a num ber of trees being killed. During the pajt few days men have been engaged In wrapping the trees with tarred pa per and steps have been taken to ex terminate the rabbits. Carrots containing strychnin have been scattered In the sections where the rabbits range and hunting parties are shooting the rabbit by moonlight County judge and Mrs, J. C. Henry returned this mornMig from Portland, where Judge Henry was In attendance at the State Good Roads convention. There were over 200 ' representative men from every county In the state present, which' shows that the ques tion of Improved highways Is receiv ing careful consideration. . , One of the features of the session was an auto ride through portions of Wasco, Multnomah and Marlon coun ties. The latter county has mor miles of good roads than any county in the state. , This has been mode possible by the employment of convict labor. At the present time no less than 60 men are employed crushing rock. The' same Is true In Multnomah county, where the city and county prisoners are employed many months each year crushing orck at Kelly Butte. mlttee to prepare a bill to be Intro duced In the next legislature to secure a state approrplatlon of 110.000 foi each dounty tor a period of 10 year, providing the counties make a similar appropriation for road work and for the appointment, of a state road su pervisor to see that this work is prop erly executed. ' " "' ' v-- Nearly every county In the state is making arrangements to conduct a campaign which will result In perma nent work. That Is, the road work may be consolidated so that the work which Is done will be of a permanent nature and not a mere skimming over the entire county, with the result that the entire road fund Is practically wasted year in and year-out. This has been the policy all over the state for a number of years and of necessity could not hav been otherwise during the early settlement of the counties, but the time is now at hand when work of a more permanent nature can be Inaugurated.
