Martin, three years ago in charge of the public schools In La Grande, is now touring Europe. 1 An Interesting letter from him to the Park City JUtah) Record, Is extreme ly interesting, and wilt no doubt be read by Martin's friends here with considerable appreciation: Rome, July 1, 1101. Editor Record: This finds mo again oa ths wins. Wo have a delightful party of 14 which I am conducting ; from . America through Europe via Naples to Glas gow, and Edlnburg. We are now In Rome.. Leave for Florence and Ven ice tomorrow after a stay of a week here. I wish I had tlrryt to give you some idea of the treasures of art -nd history In which this whole country abounds. Rome Is old and wonderful. Nearly 3000 years of history have thrown a halo of misty glory about the gruu uiu vUi' 7.'.' not as the years go by. Our train rolled out of Naples at 1:1S p. m. and pulled Into the terminal station at Rome about sunset. " No words of mine can picture the beauty and grandeur of the Cam- pngna.- the Albnn the Sabine hills and the city at the setting of the sun. The whole was bathed In a sea of crlmsotuhaze. I am stopping with my party at my old stopping place of for mer years when I made this same trip, v e have had a busy week. I mention only some of the most interesting and salient points. Yesterday In six open carriages we drove out the new Armlan way and returned by the old Appian way, unquestionably the same road which received the tread - of Paul's weary feet as he traveled to Rome. bearing the message of the cross. On this trip we visited the catacombs, where may be seen the bones of hun dreds of early Christian martyrs who fled to these places of refuge when persecuted for believing the principle. of the Christian religion. Of course, the Colosseum Ilea In tho beaten track of tourists and pilgrim;) to Rome. 1 took my party out about 11 o'clock at night to view this mighty structure by moonlight. I have In, my party some distinguished men from Georgia. the Cnrollnas. and Alabama. Their Impressions were Interesting. All were bewildered and deeply Impressed. I am always stirred with emotion as I stand In this massive building and something grim and ghostly seems to haunt every nook and corner. Where my party stood thousands of victims had gone down to death in the terrible gladiatorial contests or at the on slaught of wild beasts. Here many martyrs at various times for 400 years ahd met their fate as calmly as If go ing to a fesst Tho capacity was 17, 000 people, and it Is said that at times It was- crowded. . This afternoon I aat to driva my party to ths churches of St John Vatican, St. Peter In Chains, ths Royal Palace, Pantheon Cappu cinl aad tho Pluclan Gardens. ,Ia tho cathedrals tho almost free dom Is allowed vleltora. Even while services ars being conducted at tho al tars, parties are allowed to corns and go at will and conductors arc permit ted to make their explanations to the tourists. St Peter's, as of oldntlll teems with visitors. Some of my par ty secured an audience with the dods. They were required to dress In black, with dresses cut 'in the high neck style, and had to wear a black veil. The pope blessed them and sent them away rejoicing. The galleries of art and sculpture Interested me us much as did my for mer visits. I never tiro of the HUtlne chapel, with Its "Creation" and "Last Judgment" by Angelo.
