Telephone Farmer 1174. OPTICIANS miii i hi ii m resetting and repairing TODAY , There were no cherries to distribute at the depot this morning. The short age was an oversight among the growers no doubt, as each believed tho other fellow would furnish the supply. The boosters were on hand to give the passengers the customary "hand-out" of cherries, but none could bo given, In view of the fact .that not a cherry was on hand. The growers In close proximity to the city should make It a point each day to notify the booster office relative to the cherry supply, and by getting In communi cation with Mr. Lavey, can arrange for suppyllng the fruit at a future time. Who is coming to the front with tomorrow's supply? ww.T FIRE IN WHEAT FIELD. Over a Thousand Sacks of Grain Dc 'stroyed Thursday Night. ' Damage to the amount of about $5000 was done last night by fire on the W. A. Raymond ranch four miles northeast of ' town, , says the Walla Walla Union. Two settings of threshed wheat comprising more than 1000 sacks, derrick wagon' and feed racks of the threshing outfit of George Mo ri ul re were destroyed. The fire resulted from an explosion caused by smut, and the engine and water wagon were the only part of the outfit saved. Some standing grain was destroyed, but not much. Hard work on the part of the threshing crew and the residents of that part of the country was all that saved much more grain-from- being devoured by the flames. Reached HaU'liory Friday. H. A. Brandon, engineer In 'charge of the extension work of the O. R. ft N. from this city to Joseph, was up from headquarter at the mouth of the Wallowa river Thursday and Informed an Elgin Recorder reporter that the tracklaylng gang would reach the fish hatchery Friday. At present the gang Is laying 1000 feet of track dally, but this will be greatly Increased as soon as the Wallowa Is crossed at the pres ent wsjon road rldge, when track laying machine will be pressed Into service. Ballasting and surfacing gang are following up and the track I being placed In good condition a rapidly as possible. Mr. Brandon es timate that .It will take 41 days to reach Wallowa, A Street Car Pmwlbie. Along with, the building of the Ea gle Valley railway which will be un der way by the middle of the coming month, there should be a practical effort put forth to give Baker City a street car system and an Interurban line to Powder River valley, eays the Democrat. - Nothing would do more to add to the commercial Interests of Baker City or to benefit the farmers financially than an eelctrlc line traversing the valley, and giving the farmer quicker and easier transportation facilities to market. A proof of the becnflta accruing to a city by an Interurban line, one need go no further to Investigate than to Dolso valley. And how Boise has grown! A few years ago Rolse and Baker City were vicing with each other In number of population. Now there I no rivalry, for Boise has far out stripped us. Why? Ily the public spirit of her people, and the caryylng out of just such enterprise a we have alluded to, making the whole country for many mile around pay tribute to It greatness. . CAHMVAL IX SEPTEMBER, Annual slower Show Will Re Held eVfiteenbrr I or 10. The annual Flower carnival at El gin, will be held either September I or 1).
