Eades la now- very low In the hospital In Spokane, will bo sad news to his many friends of eastern Oregon. Con sidering the fact that he is 78 years of age and quite feeble. It is doubtful .1 4 If he ever regains his strength. How.' ever, the latest reports are to the ef- feet that he was some better. 1 j J Itv. Eades Is ono of the pioneer! characters of the northwest. He was' J born in Colo county. Mo., November 8, 1829. His family moved' from there to Platte county, when "Abrahum was about 4,i years old, and later, In 1844, crossed the plains to Oregon. When thov reached the present site of La Grande, they made camp io i...v nights near where tho Slater residence In South La Grande, now Is,', and passed on over the Blue mountains and the Cascade to Willamette val ley, settling In what Is now Yamhill county. He remained at home until he was nearly 25 years of age, when all at once, he became Impressed with the necessity of obtaining an educa tion. Prior to this time he could only read In a very limited way. He had accumulated some stock and these he disposed of and entered school, and did not stop until after he had grad uated from- the Wlllnmette valley. After leaving school he moved to Grant county and taught school for quite a while. Being always of a re ligious turn he one day stepped Into the law office of his old:tlme friend, tho late Col. George B. Currey, who remnfked: "Endes, why don't you en- 4er the mlnlatryT Your church(Meth- odist) needs men of your ability, and' yoij.would do the world, as well as yooi-i"!f, some good." That remark set Mr.- Eades to thinking, and In a few wefks he returned and said: "Colonel, I am going to preach next Sunday morning, and I want you to come out and hear me, and If you Hot Weather Bargains in Matting In our Matting Department we show a splendid assort ment, both as regards Shades, Qualuy and Prices . . . . He wa? honored with Uie office of presiding elder of the Boise district Was a del egate to the general conference In New York In 1888, and .there, as he has said, "made the speech of his life." His effort was occasioned by an attempt on the part of an eastern bishop, to force a resolution making a conference consist of not less than 50 ministers. Mr. Ends arose, and In a few minutes hud tho august body of dlgnlurl. s at his mercy, and succeeded in having tho number cut down to 85. He was the last principal of tlx Blue Mountain university, and for the past IS years or more called La Grandi his home, and still has a home In South La Grnndn. His wife passed away a few years ago, and about three years ago, while handling wild horses, he was kicked and suffered a fracturr of bo'h legs, from which he never fully recovered. Rev.
