800 years has. the ancient town on the
St. Lawrenee entertained so great a
crowd. All Is In readiness for the
biggest historical exhibition of mod
ern times, and with the official recep
tlon tomorrow to the French, English
and American battleships and the dis
tinguished guests, the week's festivi
ties will be fairly Inaugurated. The
Prince of Wales, now speeding across
the Atlantic on the famous mystery
ship, the British cruiser Indomitable
will arrive Wednesday afternoon, and
his reception will bespeak the regard
In which all Canadians hold their fu
ture king. Vice-President Fairbanks
will be among the distinguished men
who will greet the prince and bid him
welcome to the new world.
There is no such other stage In the
world for diamatlc pageantry as the
Plains of Abraham, where the gran
deur of the natural scenery defies de
scription, and where the 20,000 spec
tators In the grandstand, face' the St.
Lawrence, 300 feet below, at the point
where Wolfe's Highlanders clambered
up the heights.

attorney's office draft all the meas
ures and pass them at the same meet

Dr. K. A. J. Mackenzie of Port
land, chief surgeon of the O. R. & N.
company, spent the day In the city
yesterday as the guest of local physi
cians, and Incidentally performed an
important operation at tha Grande
Ronde hospital.
Dr. Mackenzie arrived by special at

Portland on No. 5, to which his pri
vate car was attached, last night. Dur
ing the afternoon Dr. Mackenzie was
taken for a trip in a motor car, which
extended to nearly all the places of
Interest hereabout, Including the cher
ry orchards above cove.- au uu, peti

pay one for the trip. One orchard,
that of Mr. George Thomas, will pro
duce a crop, picking of -which will
soon commence, the lowest estimate
on which is 80,000 pounds ' I
Dr. Mackenzie expressed himself aa
being delighted with the Grande
Ronde valley.' He has lived in Port
land 26 years, and has been through
this part of the state many times, but ;
never before had any idea that there -Is
in the state of Oregon such an Eden
as the Grande Ronde valley.
Dr. Mackenzie also paid a high
compliment to those who have been
Instrumental In giving to La Grande
the Grande Ronde hospital, when he
said that In his opinion the facilities
for the successful treatment of dis
ease, both surgical and medical, are as
modern and complete In tho city of
La' Grande as they are In any other
city wherever located.
