Ragged Game on Local Grounds Yes terdayCherry Picker Win Eoxily. The much heralded game between Elgin and Cove occurred yesterday on the local grounds. The even ' 100!) spectators had lots of fun, and the contingent from Cove was especially joyful, for the game was decided af ter the second Inning- or was it the third when the nine blue uniforms romped around the diamond? The Elgin rooters were much In evidence during their half of the first,, for twice the bell was rung as they trotted out at the end of the Inning. Considerable money changed hands on the result, for Elgin enthusiasts were well sup plied, and seemed not at all averse to giving odds. . By winning, Cove came out more than $300 ahead. The playing of the Elgin team was extremely ragged and amateurish, and even the. spectators from Cove were disappointed with the game, expecting at least a close game. jbrroin wi plentiful on both sides, but It seemed at times that Elgin had forgotten even the rudiments , of the game. Jack O'Brien, . as was ' expected in ' La Grande, was the man selected by Sheriff Childers to officiate, and his work gave entire satisfaction. Jack la there with the eye right enough, and not much happened that he did not see. One fellow cut first about six feet when he thought Jack had his attention riveted on second, but af ter reaching third he found himself out . One other runner cut a base, but rt the players did not see it, there was nothing said. But It Is safe to say that his Umps knew what was go ing on. Amateurs vs. Cove, The local Amateurs, alias "Boost ers," will line up against Cove here next Sunday. Each team has won a game from the other, but each claims not to have played the regular men on those occasions, and a good game Is expected, especlully as the Amateurs have been strengthened very much by the consent of Hiegri.it. Williams, Gam ble' and several others of La Grande's best amateur talent to play. Eminent Rurgi'oa Here. Dr. 'K, A- 3. MncKenzle. the em! nent Portland sirrsVfcn, paid an over Sunday vlult to his friends, Drs. Hall and Baron, returning to Portland lust night. Yesterday, accompanied by Jay Van Buren, whose car was used for the trip, Dr. Hall, Dr. Bacon and J. M. Berry, he took an auto ride over the valley, and returned much Im pressed with our resources, natural advantages, and with the slr.e of the valley, which he had not before ap. predated. Over at Cove, according to Dr. Bacon, the party raw the finest cherries in the world, of which they ate as many a possible. At the rirnndo Ronde hospital yesterday th professional sldo of Dr. MarKenzlt- eame to the front, and he performed a most delicate and successful opera tion upon Mrs. Knutson, a patient.
