County's Finances Divided,
With the announcement yesterday
that the commission appointed by
Governor Chamberlain to settle the
financial division of Wasco county, In
cident to the forming of the new
county, that their work was finished,
Hood River county becomes an In
tegral portion of the Oregon common
wealth. The commission consisted of
William Benrlchs, county Judge of
Sherman county: A. J. Derby, county
Judge of Hood River county, and A.
E. Lake, county Judge of Wasco coun
ty. Charles H. Sproat of Hood River,
had been appointed to act on the com
mission; 1ut h refused to take up the
work, hence tho appointment of the
Judge of the new county.
The commission dealt with the di
viding of the county finances, both
the moneys in the treasury to be de
voted to- the various county funds.
and the taxes which are to be collect
ed under the present assessment roll.
The work was begun July . but ow
ing to difficulties encountered in look
ing up the records, the duties of the
commission were not finished until
yesterday.
said yesterday: "You may say tor us
that the settlement has been made to
the satisfaction of the commission ap
pointed by the governor to do the
work, and that though the work pro
gressed slowly, owing to the necessi
ty of tracing up accounts In the rec
ords, when completed It represents
the quota of both Hood River and
Wasco county as nearly as we could
get at It We trust the work will
prove satisfactory, as .we were par
ticularly careful that each county
should receive its share of the funds."
