DEMOCRATK DELEGATES The Washington and Oregon dele gates and alternates to the democratic convention about to assemble in Den ver passed through La Grande . this morning. There are 22 Oregon men In the crowd, eight of them delegates, the rest alternates and visitors. Washington Is entitled to 10 votes In the convention, but according to Mr. Travis, delegate from Eugene, this state, there will be 20 Washlngtonlans In attendance, each entitled to one half a vote. The sentiment of these western men seemed to be entirely for Bryan, some saying that he will be nominated on the first ballot. In spite of the fact that a two-thirds vote is necessary, Johnson, although conceded to be a strong man. Is not regarded as the favorite by any means. One delegate was heard to say that the roll call will not have been com pleted before Bryan Is assured of the nomination. . J. D. Slater, alternate from this district, before boarding the train this morning to Join his con freres. In answer to a question from an Observer (representative, gave as his sentiments and belief regarding the convention, practically what Is given above. Mr. Slater believes that tho principal struggle will take place over the platform. In regard to the antl-lnjunctlon plank, Mr. Slater said: "Both capital and labor need the In junction. , It has been greatly abused, but I am not able to see that a strict antl-lnjunctlon law would help any one. It would make the small prop erty owner helpless In auy struggle with a powerful corporation, snd I believe that the democratic conven tion will treat this question In a man ner that will meet the approval of all reasonable men. In regard to the liquor question, It Is not probable that a national prohibition plank will be placed In the platform, but It may happen that a plank designed to help the prohibition states will find favor. I believe that Bryan, conceding his nomination, will be elected to the presidency." CITY STILL LIVES. Nothing to Indicate Tliat Pendleton Has Been Hurt, by Prohibition. There has been little In the appear ance of Main street the past few days to Indicate that the abolition of the saloons will hurt the city to any ex tent. In nearly half the cases the saloon men are still In their old loca tions selling soft drinks and cigars and booze, while In other places the bar room furniture Is being moved out to make room for other concerns. Last night was a very quiet one for the police and there was not a single victim for the police court this morn ing. Pendleton East Oregonlan.
