A lot of good people are expressing deep sympathy for the ssloon men who are forced hurriedly out of business by the recent prohibition vote. Sym pathy can do the saloon men no good. and as tin y have had no sympathy for others In the past then they should expect none for thi-inelv now. Speaking of sympathy, let n back to conditions hi re a few years ago, . Wncn the gunio were nni. The saloon men allowed the games n their places, supported them, protected them anil shared in the proceeds. ' Did they .then luve any sympathy for the wives and children of the men who were simply robbed In the games .night after night? Did they think of the bare feet and ragged clothes and empty coal boxes 'of those families? Did, they make any effort to protect those families? ' A whole lot of people are placing their sympathy on the wrong card. Pendleton East Oregontan. . . It Is a peculiar breed of cattle we have In this country those who would steal from the grave of a person not yet Interred. Of what earthly use Is a souvenir of; this kind, and how long will they last? Such desecrators are usually too small to be noticed, but In the case where they deliberate ly ruined property In order' to secure a regnembrance of the late lamented ex-presldent Cleveland, severe pun ishment should be meted out, a punishment that would put an end to their depredations. - ' , ' - Speedy justice evidently animates h .etlnn of Whitman eonntv rtreitlt court. There Is little delay In the trial of Bud Barnes, accused of the murder of Mrs. Aldrleh. The retrial Jury has been secured and the case Is now be Ing heard at Walla Walla, a change of venue being denied. .'. - - - Oftentimes It would be convenient to cast secret votes. The Portland Telegram publishes the vote at a re cent Issued which faced the council of that city and the public, Is now aware who, of .the body, are In the grip of the saloons and reign of dis order. Street Commissioner Matott has a chromo coming. The way h main tains law and order In the weed de partment Is encouraging. When the day of the continued celebration ar rives on July 1. he will have the city's thoroughfares In spick and span shape. A ffOKD TO THK KNOCK KR. If you want to retain friends don't be a knocker. When you see a neigh bor f,.nw worker getting along nicely, don t be envious of his good fortuno hy knocking him. If you are Inclined t kick, go up an alley and kick a fence post, or take a. kick c yourself. Don't get sore because some other ffllow has a little more of the "getuptlvrness" and sand than you have. Don't grunt, growl and grum ble. In other words, for the sake of consistency, don't knock. The Typo, graphical Journal. . One can excuse mistakes he sees In reading newspapers, when the hurry and confusion of closing the forms Is taken Into consideration. But when a sign painter, who has ample time to do his work, make such mistakes as ono who point'.! this sign, "Cleaning and Dyeing," ;her Is not much ex cuse. We can forgive him for spelling It "cleanelng," but the word dyeing stung him. You can see where he had erased after making It "dicing "dying." but he finally let It go as "ding." Testerday af- ti-rnoon a flowing well was struck In the city limits of this place, and the Mri um Is now pouring out of the earth at the rate of H gallons per minute. Well Driller Knchenspargcr of La Grande, was sinking a well for Allien Itutrhlnnon of this city, and had resihed a depth of S00 feet, when the otor commenced to flo wout of the hip. The stream la of such volume that II seems to be permanent. Not having any way of rontroll the water. It now follows gravitation and Is run ning unharnessed about the streets. The town Is considerably excited over the flow. People come from the country to drink at the well. Cool and .parkllng. It Invites taste, but there la a slight sulphur odor and tasts In the liquid. The well ha been declared finished and ths driller has moved elsewhere. Already there ara plans on foot for curbing ths stream and turning ths water Into useful channels.
