MQCOR INTERESTS OB STRUCT IMPROVEMENTS Enterprises Opposed -Business Boy cotted Laboring Men Intimidated We Have Given Them Years for Reformation We Hs.ve Seen .Enough. The history of the liquor traffic In this county is the history of fawning patronage In times of need, and of brazen effrontery and bosslsm when In power. When city and county offl. clals can be bought op It suits well but If they cannot bv bought ; then threats and punishment are In order. Study your town and see whether the liquor power Is not a party to It self. Republicans and - democrats count for nothing when the question of money and power Is at issue. mow often the Issue has come up this way. The city needed and the taxpayers wanted some Improvement as lights, water, etc. The saloon men were angry because of some enforce ment of law against gambling or Sun day selling. To punish the officials In power they voted and worked against the Improvement. Or, haven't you seen saloons refuse to support a Fourth of July celebra tion unless they were allowed to open gambling for a few days? - A few years ago such a. bluff war offered La Grande business people, but when It was seen that we could celebrate without 'em, they walked up with a donation. The boycott Is a favorite weapon of the saloons. Many business men who know this are koeping quirt, but will voto against license and many others who know It have reached the bolm : where they ar ready to defy an Insti tution that is so tyrannical. Every man who darts stand up and be count ej for the home against the saloon If i marked man. Thank God, not s few are willing to be marked. They lewrve to. be mnrked. Tliei Former Vok i The country poople are generally on the right side. They have greater liberty than the merchants whose bus iness Is sometimes threatened If they stand up for reforms. Let us urge that a full vote of the farmers Is asked next Monday. Hundreds of men who pay no taxes will vote, many of them against prohibition. The towns get nearly alf the license, but the tax- payers of the county must pay court expenses, poor house expenses, etc. Each farmer vote, 10 X Tor Prohibi tion, will kill the vole of some'fellow who pays no taxes, but wants the sa loons. Rain or shins, farmer, go to the polls, and get your neighbors out. Heal I'jitnle Transfrm Filed In the recorder's office of Union county, Oregon, for week ending May 1, 1908.
