State of Oregon, County of Lane, ss: E. A, Farrlngton being first duly sworn, says: (- I am and since the 9th day of March 1905, have been city marshal of the city of Eugene, Lane county, Oregon. That prior to the first of July, 1906, the sale of Intoxicating liquors was li censed In said city, and since that date there has been prohibition tder lo cal option. I am told that more arrests for drunkenness have been made since lo cal option went Into effect in Lane county that formerly. Is being used as an argument that thcTe Is more liquor sold and more Intoxication In the city than formerly. As a matter of fact, I am sure that in comparison with for mer times, there has been, under lo cal option, very little liquor sold with in the city of Eugene, and there has been very much less intoxication than before. . j The records show 70 arrests for ICE CREAM This is the open season for Ice Cream and we are pre pared to furnish the trade Vith the very best. Today, Eugene is one of the most orderly and law- abiding places in the country. E. A. FARINOTOX. Subscribed and sworn to before me this 16th day of May, 1908. JESSE G. August 1, 1907, adopted state prohibition. Thut prohibition is practical tor large cities has been proven by prohi bition in San Francisco, police figures- showing a total of 837 arrests In the city for the two prohibition months of May and June, 1906, as compared with 4 arrests for the two following- months of high license. The Portland Oregonlnn, although strongly" anti prohibition, editorially declares that it has been proved beyond the slightest possibility of doubt that a large city like San Francisco can thrive without the liquor traffic." A still more striking Illustration Ir that of Kansas City, Kan. The stati law had never been honestly enforced until recently when rising public sen timent ousted the law-defying mayor and through Attorney Trlckett closed permanently every one of the nearly 200 wide-open Joints, with the. result of Increased prosperity for banker; and real estate' men, and an almost complete suspension of crime and law lessness. The oft-reiterated question, "V:!: prohibition work In great cities?" h it now been answered for nil time In the affirmative, and proven beyond doub: by the examples of these two cities. But Sun Francisco and Kansas t'lly ftro only representative of a long am" growing list of similar cases, amour: them, being Cambridge, Qulney and n dozen other cities of Massachusetts: Colorado Springs, Col.; Evanstort, III.; Fargo and Grand Forks, N.
