The republican platform of the state of Washington contains a de mand for a strong Jocal option law, by which the people of the various com munities may regulate the liquor traf fic to ault themselves. This Is an ad vance ,atep which will make the re publican party stronger than ever In the northwest. THIS CHANGE AXD EDUCATIOX, Dy some misconception some people - in the state have got hold of a notion that the grange Is opposed to eduea- - tlon along the lines of specialization and stands for nothing higher than the ordinary common school can give to cltlsens generally. In fact, we are told that at some of their state meet ings they were looked upon as people of such ordinary Intelligence that the simplest form of the Anglo-Saxon had, to be used In order to make them un derstand what was said to them. Could some of these mistaken people have been admitted to the conferences of the organisation they would have learned that topics of public Interest were discussed with aa keen Intelli gence and critical knowledge as would have been found In any organization of learned men. One notable feature of the meeting The score stood four all. Yesterday afternoon,' before a large crowd, the tie was played off, with the result that Elgin was defeated, f to 1. These two games and a series of races officially dedicated the new race track In this city. The Elgin players left last eve ning for La Grande, returning to their home this morning.
